my friend and I went to SC, and fished the Santee Cooper lakes back in May. we were fishing the river channel at least a mile from any land, a couple hours after dark some kind of small flies, started swarming around our boat and they kept getting thicker and thicker, so bad it was hard to breath and you couldn't open your eyes at all. I have never smoked in my life but I asked my smoking friend for a cigarette to smoke, thinking the smoke would keep the flies out of my nose and eyes, we turned the rubrail blacklights on and the flies dropped down and swarmed the lights. when we could peek out our eyes , we fired up the engine and ran down the lake, the flies were everywhere we went but weren't as thick as at that one spot. I would have loved to had a pair of those to put over my head that night.

hey man, I didn't exaggerate on the story, that was the worst experience with insects I ever had. had to pull my shirt up over my mouth and nose to breathe. there were thousands and thousands of them stuck to my boat the next morning.

The few times I smoked cigars while fishing was in Florida because in the summer when there is very little wind and you have your boat in the weeds these bugs swarm you! Anglers use Bounce sheets and other remedies to get those bugs from landing on their face and neck. It's maddening!!!
