Just got back from 3 days down with my wife but not much of a fishing trip as we were doing maintenance around the place. Went out Monday morning on Barkley and found the surface bite slow-ish. I had 8 or 10 bits but only hooked up with 2 smaller ones. They were just kind of passive on the strikes. When I came off surface I caught several other small fish but was only out 3 hours or so. Ran into some schooling whites with the misses later on the pontoon which was fun. Late yesterday took another toon ride as it was clouding up and I definitely picked the wrong fishing window. I didn't have a trolling motor on the toon so just stopping and blowing across a few points I found the fish pretty active. I pulled up on one point and with the combo of a small popper and curly tail must have landed over 20 small largemouth and 1 keeper. Also shook off a 17 or 18 inch sauger at the boat. Of all my time on Barkley I don't recall ever having caught a sauger although I catch them on KY from time-to-time. Ended up blowing across one more point and took a keeper smallmouth on surface. Man I wish I was out in the bass boat. Bait fish are stacking up in the mouths of the creeks. With this cool snap coming I think that will accelerate and better fish won't be far behind. Good luck this weekend. I plan to head down again early next week myself and get on KY this time. Sharpening up the hooks on my surface lures...
