4000 gallons of Cumene (a petroleum base substance) was spilt

A barge hit a guide wall entering the lock at Brookport

As of right now, I have not heard anything in regards to an environmental impact............

River is at very high volume.. this will most likely have no long lasting affect on fish or the river due to the dilution of the chemical.. STILL it is one more chemical in the river to deal with. Thank the good lord for Zebra Mussels??

    Unhappy Re: 8000 gallons

It's a shame, the barge that was damaged, must have been only a single skin barge container. I'm not for sure when the law was enacted or the Bill relating to the skins on a barge. But I know after a certain year all barges are supposed to be double skinned, to keep such a thing from happening... I worked at JeffBoat building these barges for 3 years and my sister was a pipe welder there for 10 years....If you want to check on something follow up to see if all the barges are still being required to be double skinned....

Paducah tv station reported this morning it was 4000 gallons. One gallon is too much.

    Re: 8000 gallons

Agree with Dave that 1 gallon is too much. However, from an aquatic tox issue, it could have been a much worse chemical. Cumene ,also known as isopropyl benzene, was one of those chems that recently went through the reregistration process via EPA, including tox studies on fresh water animals. Cumene actually falls under the moderately toxic category under rigid lab conditions, but is probably much less a hazard in open water. It has very high volatility and biodegradability in open exposure situations. I'd be more worried about people exposure in the area where it's "flashing off" than potential fish kills.

Like I said, not justifying any of this and certainly wouldn't want it in my drinking water , just saying it could have been a much worse scenario from a fishes point of view.

    Re: 8000 gallons

I live about 3 miles by water (downstream) from the crash location, They were almost to the point of evacuation, even said not to go outside, but then came along and basically said they never said those things....

The smell was so strong the night it happened. From what I hear, they do not know what the impact will be....

The boat hit the downstream approach wall. The lock was underwater but they do have lights on the lockwalls marking the dam, until the water gets too high to run them.

I am also hearing 8000 gallons from a good friend that is working the crash site.
