Fished Elkhorn from 9 to 2 PM yesterday. Would have been 8 to 2 PM, but really wasn't in the mood to stand in water with lightning all around. Intuitition told me it would be a good day, with rain coming in after a prolonged warm spell.
Had a great time and the smallies are definitely active. Partner caught the biggest I've seen a long time, probably pushing 4 and full of roe. Smacked myself for not bringing a camera.
I caught 3 over 2 lbs, one 3, and a few 10-12 inchers. The smaller fish haven't filled out yet. Best bite came during the periods of rain we had. It was overcast all day. The water was rising slowly from the overnight rain, but hadn't turned color yet. All my fish came on a Mann's 1 Minus worked on top and a small Matzuo frog pattern popper. Partner's hawg came on a Pop-R that I thought was way too big for the creek. Shows what I know.
Had no hits on either a white/silver tube or a tiny Rebel crankbait. Even stranger, we had a few shiners as an insurance policy and we couldn't buy a bite on them. Everything we caught was on topwater.
Don't know water temp but it wasn't bad at all. Rainwater flowing into the creek sure was cold, though, wouldn't be surprised if water temp takes a dip.

Bought me a new pair of waders, so I can enjoy some of that creek action this year....Going to try Floyds Fork and a couple of others around here. Might even go back up to Indiana and fish the Little Blue river again for those Brownies and Goggle Eyes I used to catch....
Great report, John! I've been thinking about Elkhorn quite a bit lately... So, uhhh, when are you taking me?LOL...
I need to get back out there myself.
Yeah, id have to say elkhorn is one of my favorite places to fish, if not my favorite. Theres nothing better than wading thru the creek in june catching smallies all day. I like to post up in some spots and sein up a bunch of creek chubs and cast out let em sit there and theres really no tellin what youll catch. Cats, smallies, largies, drum, bluegill, rockbass, the ocasional garr which really ***** and ive even caught a crappie there before. Its a great place to fish and i cant wait to get back. It seems to me though that the algea and moss would still be takin up most the creek. Let me know about that if you read this. Thanks alot. BMNEWT
Yep there was quite a bit of algae on the bottom. Just bump the bottom with your crankbait and your cast was over.
New moss covered most of the rocks in the rapids, but it wasn't very slick. Give it a few days and I'm sure it will be.
sounds like a great day. i am glad to see such good results from smaller waters. just wondering if you had a guess on water temerature, and if the bites were in the shallows.
thanks and good luck to all!
Any guess on water temp would be just that, but we waded without it feeling really cold. If I had to guess I'd say high 50s, but as I said the rain runoff was much colder than what was already in the creek.
Almost all the fish we caught were in one of two kinds of places: deep slow holes surrounded on at least one side by fast water, and the top ends of the deeper eddies.
I was up in the North Fork last Sunday for about an hour. The water was still cool. Real noticeable through the waders. Wouldn't be surprised to find it in the high 50/low60 this weekend, but we may in a backslide heading toward next weekend.Any guess on water temp would be just that, but we waded without it feeling really cold. My move to Gtown is in the 1st stage. Can't wait until it's complete. I'll fish it every other day at some point.
Good luck fellows.
