I want to see the Brownfish that could pull me out of the boat as well.
I have decided that I am turning PRO and now call myself a PROFESSIONAL FISHERMAN at Dale Hollow. That is correct, you read it right, a PROFESSIONAL FISHERMAN. The only drawback to this is that I am also an AMATEUR CATCHERMAN as well. KVD, Luke, Nixon and all those other Pro's need to change their titles to PROFESSIONAL CATCHERMAN, for I am in the PROFESSIONAL FISHERMAN club, not only a member but the President as well.
Friday night fished Mitchell Creek and a few favorite spots on the mid lake. Never got a pattern together, I caught one good Greenfish around 4lb on a Spinnerbait and Chunk landed a good Smallie just shy of 4lbs, on a 3/4 oz jig just before sunup on a ledge. Tried just about everything, I had another one hooked but did not get a good hookset, made a comment to Chunk that I never got a good set a few seconds before I LDR'd her (LDR - Long Distance Released). Decided to give up on the usual stuff and fish nothing but humps and ledges on night 2. Launched on Night 2 and went to my first ledge, located, threw out marker, backed off and Chunk lands a good Keeper Spot on the second cast with a C Rig and 10" power worm. This ledge and hump running was new to me on Dale for I had never done it exclusively at this lake before so had to find them all in the dark, some with GPS service and some without. On spot #3, I hooked a good fish on a C Rig that I fought for a few seconds before she got me hung up in some deep brush pile. Went in after her and could feel her pulling on the other side of the pile all the way up until she broke me off, same spot where I lost a REALLY good Smallie on a spinnerbait 2 trips back and a spot that if you get bit is usually a GOOD fish. Fished a few others on the way down the lake then went to the spot that I told Cliff in the room, if we can find it it will produce. No GPS service but found it by Spotlight on the banks and sonar. Threw out marker, backed off and first cast Chunk lands another Smallie just shy of 4lbs on a Big Jig. This is where it gets REAL FUNNY for Cliff starts comparing me to Dave Stewart, saying find it, mark it, cast and land a good one. There is a long gap between Dave Stewarts guiding ability and mine and no chance of the gap closing any time soon. Chunk lands another while I am still smelling the SKUNK in the back of the boat. Very slow bite, so we made a drastic change basically for me to catch anything, so we hit this one bank that has a bunch of laydowns in water up to 30 feet deep. I would have taken the smallest Spotted Bass by this time. He lands the smallest Smallie that he has ever caught in the lake and I am still on SKUNK. We head to my favorite #1 deep flat to sling some spinnerbaits for nothing caught here are less than 3lbs either (per my experience). Until this night when I manage to haul in a 6" Greenfish, that is 6" not 6lbs. I laughed it off but I was off the SKUNK. Hit a few more spots to no avail, then went to my favorite lit boat ramp, told Cliff where the honey spot was and he so graciously let me have first shot, and I manage to catch the SKINNIEST Greenfish that I have ever caught. It was 15" long, Keeper, but barely weighed a pound. No belly at all and looked horrible. A few more cast and it was on the trailer, back to the motel for a nap, then head back to the house. Tough catching, lots of fishing. Counting these 2 nights, I have had 3 good nights compared to 8 horrible nights at Dale the past couple of months. More fishing than catching but that is what it is all about. I did talk to Steve Headrick on Saturday and he said a guy showed up at the store and beat on the window at midnight Friday night for he saw the light on and wanted Steve to weigh a fish for him. 8lb 11 oz Largemouth caught on a big jig DEEP. Really nice fish for August, easy 10lber in the spring. From what Steve says, 5 fish a night are good night right now. Good Luck to all.
Anyway you look at it Elwood you have done better than me. Got back to good ol Laurel lake and she is deader than ever. One good bite on a spinnerbait last week and lose another good fish on a jig. Only two bites the whole night. Man it's tough right now and can't wait for good ol fall weather to get here. Be back on the Big C next week.
Mike, I plan on heading to Laurel for a night extravaganza on the 31st for my first trip to Laurel. Have a bunch of deep water spots marked on the map to try and will be drowning some jigs, C Rigs and spinnerbaits in hopes of catching some of those Big Brownies that are suppose to be swimmin in the lake. Probably done with Dale until FNF season so Laurel will be my next choice for the rest of the summer.Anyway you look at it Elwood you have done better than me. Let me know when you go down elwood and maybe I can sneak down there for a few hours with you in between work hours. Smallies should be in a much better mood by then with the moon changes coming. Had two weighed in last night at our local tourny that were just an ounce shy of 6lbs. Hard to beat.

Elwood: All you have to do when that happens (back seater gets a big one on the first cast after you pull up on a spot) is net the fish, pat em on the shoulder and say: "See, this isn't all that hard is it"...and you will close that gap considerably...lol.
P.S. DON'T LOOK SURPRISED also helps.
What was so funny about the whole thing is that it reminded me of when you took me ledge fishing the first time and pulled up on the #1 ledge, you know the one, and said cast that way, I heave a C Rig and you are telling me how to work it on Cast #1, then the second cast I bring in the nice 3lber. Saturday morning it was me doing the pointing, and Cliff bringing in the 3-14 Smallie on the second cast with a jig then late Saturday night on the second cast with a C Rig he catches a nice spotted bass. Those are the only 2 comparisons that I can make between my ability to "Guide" versus yours. I have said it many times before on this site and will say it again, Dave Stewart is an Excellent Teacher and anyone that gets the chance to go with him will more than get his/her money's worth. First to admit that on the 3 trips with Dave that I took, we never got into the mother load, but I would not have learned what I do know and won 2 different tourneys at Ky Lake (not bad when you consider I have only fished 2 tourneys at Ky Lake) specifically on what Dave taught me. If you get a chance to go with Dave, TAKE IT. I learned a lot from Dave and Cliff said he learned a lot from me Saturday night on his first venture ledge fishing exclusively. Different lakes, KY Lake and Dale Hollow, and only time on the water will allow me to weed out which ledge is better than another at Dale Hollow. Find the structure break first, then find cover on these breaks and most likely fish will be holding there or will be there some time during the night. If they are pulling water all the better. C Rig, Big Jigs, Swim Baits, Heavy Spinnerbaits, Deep Crankbaits all will produce on these types of areas. Woody, you keep catching all these largemouths and you're gonna have to change the old handle to elnutGREENjaws! Thanks again for the lesson.

Did I mention that would never happen? Had a good time Hens, wish we could have landed a few more fish, either Green or Brown, I would have settled for a nice healthy Rock Bass just to say I hung something with gills.

Nice report.
Let me now if you're going to be in Gtown next weekend. If so, we'll take that V bottom and run some creek for you to study on.
The North Fork got a nice drink of water. Hopefully by next weekend we'll get another,
Billy
