Cumberland.. tomorrow

Fished the FnF today near Jamestown. We didn't get started early enough (around 9). Had a lot of bites early. I caught 1 10" and a 16" KY and a 17.5" Smallie. Lost two keeper KYs and what I think must have been a very large Smallie that broke off when it ran. Might have been a striper or a flathead though. I had nothing for it.

Well, Caney/Wolf is right near Jamestown, sort of 'mid lake'.. so I guess that even puzzles me more as to why I couldnt even find fish on the graph. I really thought it was broken!

Can anyone tell what the fish were biting? slow? Fast? Jigs? Worms? I am going to go back later next week and dont want to make the 2.5 hr trip for nothing. I am thinking about going to Laurel instead of Cumberland tho.

Are the fish all 'schooled' up? Is that why there was nothing on the graph anywhere?

Help me out here folks.

The fish I've been catching have been 1/2 back of the creeks. Wind blown banks, coves, points are best...the wind push the shad towards the bank. My buddies have been fishing the main lake area hitting bluffs but they went back Saturday and only had 5 throwbacks. We've been using jigs, lucky craft pointers, and wiggle warts. Just mixing it up a bit. I would suspect that after this week (cold temps) that the FNF will get hot. And you know, I shouldn't do this, but I fish spots sometimes and won't see anything on the graph and still catch a few. Just fishing spots where I've caught 'em in the past.

We all buy licences and if someone wants to keepa few to eat, then so be it. PETA loves this kind of thing, disagreement among the ranks (fisherman to fisherman). Why can't we all get along, to each his own. Just to ease your pain Mhall, if you read the other post of mine in this thread, my buddies realeased a 7 pounder (smallie) so I'm pretty sure he released the other three to five pounders he caught . I released an 8-3 largemouth at Barren this past spring. Not many people can say that.......they are all throwbacks as far as I'm concerned (except a Kentuck every now and then).

Easy big fella I didn't mean to rile you up there. I too will eat Kentuck's and love'em about 10 to 12 inches long, hmmm good. I never keep largemouth or smallmouth bass, and I obvisously read your post wrong. It had the sound of a bunch of keepers being kept, which I guess really isn't my business either. I'm just passionate about Catch and release and promote it whenever I can. Sorry for the misunderstanding, take care.

Not trying to start anything, but I never understood why a KY is acceptable, but a LM and SM isn't. I don't keep any of them, so I'm just asking.

O.K. here goes and I hope this makes sense. According to the fishery biologist here in the state they encourage the keeping of Spotted bass. This is the reason there is no size limit on them, although they do have the same creel limit of six per day as do the other black bass species. The reason they want people to keep them is the fact thy are much more of a prolific reproducer than that of large or smallmouth. This creates at times an overpopulation and food competion issue with the more desired target species of smallmouth or largemouth. Kentuckies generally don't grow as large as the others and take alot longer to achieve their size. I usually let everything go but will keep the spots at times to eat. I had a fishery biologist tell me at Cumberland once to keep and eat every spot I caught because I was doing the lake service when I did. His words not mine, hopefully this helps a bit.

KYs are much better tasting, also, IMO. I brought a few home last weekend and they were as good as anything you can get in a restaurant.

See, that's another thing I do not understand. KYs and LMs are so similar that it seems they'd have to taste the same (if they were of similar size and from the same water).
