I've done really well at Rough River in April using #7 shad raps trailed by pet spoons. I have also used live shad that time of year when i see some I can net. Usually troll long flats with drop offs near by.

THAT'S FUNNY THAT YOU SHOULD MENTION THAT....MY UNCLE AND I TRIED ROUGH RIVER LAST JUNE WITH THAT EXACT SET-UP, HAVING HEARD THAT IT PRODUCES......AND...NOTHING! WE WERE BUMBED! WE TROLLED DOWN ALONG THE EDGE OF THE CHANNEL, AROUND THE LITTLE ISLAND THERE AND BACK SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO HITS. HOWEVER, WE DID GO BACK A FEW WEEKS LATER AND GOT BACK INTO A BAY WITH STAND-UPS AND JUST KILLED THE LARGE-MOUTH! THAT WAS FUN! WE DID SEE TWO GUYS WHO WERE TRYING TO CATCH CRAPPIE WITH MINNOWS, BUT THEY KEPT HOOKING INTO HYBRIDS! THEY WERE GOOD SIZE TOO! WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY LIVE BAIT AT THE TIME....YOU NEVER HAVE IT WHEN YOU NEED IT! HA! I KNOW THEY'RE IN THERE THOUGH....DEFINETLY GONNA TRY IT AGAIN THIS YEAR...THANKS FOR THE HEADS-UP! HAGD!

Early in the year move up stream twards the river. Later in the summer fish higher up in the lake near docks around dusk.

We were fishing a tourny one Spring and got into the Hybrids so thick that we fished for them and said heck with the tourny! Man that was fun! The baitfish were jumping up on the bank! AWESOME

I'd pick Barren hands down. I start in early April fishing up the river with large twister tails and sassy shads. Chicken liver, night crawlers and crawfish work also. Then in late April early May go to the lower end and parallel the banks with shallow running cranks, redfins and top waters at night. By Memorial Day I'm usually catching them in the jumps on top waters, around the Hogs Back, Baileys Point and the Islands, early in the morning and late in the afternoons. This usually lasts on into June. On into the summer lots are caught trolling, on spoons and fishing crawfish at night. Just stop at Ranger Bobs at the dam and they'll steer you in the right direction. Good Luck.

Barren River is the one spot in KY that you can catch Hybrids all year long. Winter is for the true chaser of the silver footballs. Lake is at winter pool if you are willing to walk out to the creek beds and fish around any eddies you see where the water is a little deeper 1/8 oz doll flys in white or chartuse, or yozurie pen minnows, most will not be monsters but they will give you a run like you have never seen in fresh water. in April when the shad are working the banks net as many as you can keep alive and head down to the wake barrier by the Narrows use your electronics and watch around 15 to 20 feet drop a 3 to 4 inch shad hooked thru the nostrils and hang on I have had 20 pound line stripped from my reel and once using 50lb spider wire they broke off 4 0 hooks. if you are looking to take a wall mount or maybe the new record for KY head below the dam fish within the first 100 yards from the spillway cast both directions using lead heads and buck tails or twistertails use the size it takes to hold the bait down about 4 feet live baits work too. I was there the day the now standing KY record was caught I promise that I have seen many fish that would have topped it out by a pound or more. unfortunatly alot of poaching and fishing over limmits have slowed the action down but still one of the best places to go and land 10 to 15 pounders with some regularity. hope to see ya down here.

THANKS DENNIS...I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT THE BARREN RIVER TAILWATER! MONSTERS DOWN THERE! I WENT THERE LAST SUMMER FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS DOING. IT WAS REALLY HOT AND THE RIVER WAS REALLY LOW. I WATCHED A LITTLE ORIENTAL LADY COME UP THE WALKWAY ABOVE THE OUTLET WATERS WITH LIVE 5 INCH ALEWIVES. I WATCHED IN AMAZEMENT AS SHE HOOKED ONE MONSTER HYBRID AFTER ANOTHER! IT WAS CRAZY! SHE WOULD EITHER CATCH ONE OR MISS ONE ON EVERY CAST! AND THEY WERE AVERAGING AT LEAST 6-7 LBS! I NEVER WISHED SO HARD IN MY LIFE THAT I KNEW WHERE SHE GOT THOSE ALEWIVES! I THREW EVERYTHING I OWNED THAT LOOKED LIKE A SHAD WITH NO RESULTS AT ALL! I CASTED ALL AROUND HER AND DIDN'T EVEN GET A BITE! TALK ABOUT FRUSTRATING! ANY IDEA ON GETTING ALEWIVES??? THANKS!
