    Wink Crappy fishing

I am just like all you diehard fisherman, except I admit I am not all that good at it.. (That was hard to type Anyway, I'm ready to start the fishing season and this year I want to catch fish!!!! First thing, crappy, I've caught something like 4 in my life. Do I need a bunch of poles all at different depths to find them. Should I use minnows or jigs... Any advise for finding crappy. I have a pretty good fish finder. ( its not my equipment......)

LOl! Spelling can changed that word's meaning. Like catching Stippers on Cumberland instead of Stripers.

you can catch plenty with just two poles. Spinning gear with slip bobbers, splitshot sinkers and gold hooks and minnows. If you can see some marks on your depth finder try just above that depth by 1-2 feet. . or else just go to Taylorsville in any timbered cove around Settlers Trace over 25-35 feet of water, drop your minnows at say 10 and 13 feet and let it set for no more than 5 minutes. Get right next to the trees. If no bites, move bait (cast) to another location(s) or adjust depth. As it gets warmer, they will move a little shallower. That should work on rough and Nolin too. Also works with little jigs tipped with bee moth larva (wax worm). take a friend and you'll reduce time figuring out depth. My 2 cents.

I think the best help would be to go with someone that really knows how to catch them. Or hire a guide. I have a hard time with crappie, because I always end up trying for bass - so I would definitely leave all your bass stuff at home, and just concentrate on crappie. I am hoping to learn more about crappie this year, too.

Man Do I Love Crappie! I Could Write About This All Day, But Unfortunately I've Gotta Go To Work!

First Off, If You Are Fishing For Crappies Anytime Of The Year, Except For The Spawning Period, Plan On Fishing Deep With Vertical Jigs. Locate The Creek Channels And Drop-offs On Your Finder, Then Mark Those Spots. Vertical Jig Around Your Marker, Starting Off Around 10 Ft And Getting Deeper Until You Get Into Fish. Make Sure You Use An Ul Rod Of At Least 8' In Length For This Type Of Jigging Due To The Fact That Crappie In Deep Water Are Hard To Feel When They Bite. A Longer, Lighter Rod Will Give You Ultimate Sensitivity, And In Turn Give You More Hook-ups. Also, The Weight Of Your Jig Head Is Critical. The Heavier The Jig Head, The Easier It Is To Maintain Contact With, And The Easier To Feel Bites. So, Go As Heavy As You Can Without Compromising On Hook Size.

As For The Spawning Period, It's A No-brainer! Find The Beds, Cast Out With A Bobber Using Anything From Minnows, Plastics, Or Hand-tied Feather Jigs (my Favorite!)....and Hold On! It's So Easy That My Little 4 Yr Old Daughter Caught 20 Last Spring In Just A Couple Hours! Just Remember...crappie Feed From Below Their Prey...constantly Looking Upwards. So, If You Find Fish Or A Brushpile On Your Finder...set-up Your Line One-two Feet Above It.

It's Gonna Be Hard To Go To Work Now That I'm All Pumped Up For Crappie Fishing! Thanks! Lol! Good Luck To All In Search Of The Paper-mouths! And May The Fishing Gods Smile Upon Us!

    Re: Crappy fishing

I am looking for info on crappie fishing at either Rough River, Nolin or Taylorsville. I have spent time on Rough but that time is usually in the summer enjoying watersports and not fishing. Usually stay near Peter Cave. Need some info on possible locations in that area but I am willing to make the run to the other end of the lake. Does the State Dock rent fishing boats? Taking my father fishing and would like to get in to some fish instead of hunting for them, but then again it wouldn't be called fishing. I'll post my results after trip, we are looking at end of March to mid April for the trip. Any info would be very helpful and appreciated. Thanks
