Any good spots near Louisville to catch some bowfin? I know the river is full of gar.
Also kind of an odd request but, besides being a fisherman, Im also an avid collector of the rarest of the rare predatory fish. I'm will to spend $1000-5000 for a red/gold/yellow gar or albino bowfin and $500-1000 for a mellanistic (all black) gar or bowfin. Fish must be live of course! Anyone ever seen such fish?

I like fishing for gar but ive never caught anything like your looking for.
Mellanistic (all black) and xanthinc (yellow/gold) fish are rare but seem to happen more often in primitive fish such as bowfin and gar for some reason. A true once in a life time fish. Sadly most fisherman have no idea how much they are worth and kill or release them. Leucistic (snow white not albino pink) gar are very rare. I personally know a gentleman that paid over $10,000 for one of these fish!
I doubt I will ever be fortunate to find such a fish, but I still would like to know where to catch som bowfin. They are very fun to catch and I havnt caught any since Ive lived in KY.Im still looking for a place to catch them.
Patoka Lake in Southern Indiana has Bowfin in it......Caught one on a Pig-n-Jig one time......
Bandit1 caught 1 at Patoka at are our classic last year.
Some of the strip pits in Ohio and Mulenburg co have both in them, also I think the Green river has both in it also. But if you want to get a shot at a trophy bowfin go to Santee Cooper in South Carliona, I was down there this spring fishing the Southern Div and several guys caught some hawgs, I lost one they are some mean fish.
ive caught a few bowfin at p-body I dont remember catchin 1 that is black and far as the fight man there a freight train. LOL

Reelfoot Lake in Tenn. has a lot of Bowfin. Rough River has a lot of gar, don't know about the different colors but has some huge ones. Saw about a hundred or so in one small area last week some around 4 ft long. Can't figure out why you want to target either of these species though.
Have you ever caught a 4 foot crappie that leaps clear out of the water thrashes about when hooked? What about a 10lb pound crappie with teeth and muscle to rip a spinner bait to shreds and test the best of tackle? No? I didnt think so, and that is why I target these fish.Reelfoot Lake in Tenn. has a lot of Bowfin. Rough River has a lot of gar, don't know about the different colors but has some huge ones. A fish doesnt have to taste good (as a side note Amia calva (bowfin) eggs are now being harvested and marketed as Cajun Caviar and the industry is booming right now!) to be a fun fish to catch. Dont get me wrong, I love tossin out a bobber and a fat head to load the cooler up with some slabs for a fish fry as much as the next guy, but I will bet ya you cant tangle with a monster gar or bowfin and NOT have a smile on your face!
Also, as stated in my original post, I'm looking to add the rare color morphs to my collection and to give you fellas the heads up that any oddball colored fish rather it be a bass or a gar can be worth thousands of $$$!!!
BTW CK, have you ever caught a black nosed crappie? The crappie with the "racing stripe" from their chin up and over to their dorsal.
How'd you like to snag this?
