A fishermans code??

I was recently talking to a non fisherman that said "I thought you fishermen had a code"

Is there a fishermans code? The only one I've ever heard of is "Early to bed, early to rise, fish like hell and make up lies"

What was the topic? I have to say that most fisherman seem to have that kindred spirit.

Did they mean a code, as in secret signals or something? If there is one, I've only learned two signals so far:
1. Slowing down and giving another boat a wide berth means, "Hey, how ya doin', hope you're catchin' some, good luck, have a good day."
2. Speeding by and waking them means, "Hi, I'm a schmuck, but I think I'm better than you."

I'd like to learn some others, though.

I took it as a behavior type of code. Things that you would or wouldn't do with or to another fisherman

We have a code...it is called the Golden Rule. Some abide by it, some don't.

When I was on the lake this past spring I could tell from 100 yards away that this moron in his "go fast" bass boat was going to come by me at full throttle within less than 20 to 30 yards from me and where I was fishin', trolling motor in the water, etc...to 99% of the fishermen out there it would have been obvious that I was fishin' this particular spot, but not for this moron. He didn't take the side of the boat that didn't have any lines out, he chose to cut between where my boat was positioned and the bank. So...I chose to wave him on through by raising my right hand and saluting him with the "code" persay, the one finger code.

Fishin from a jon boat on my favorite creek last sunday and about got knocked off it by two knuckleheads in a bass boat who didn't hardly slow down when passing me. This creek is less than 30 yards wide and 14 feet deep. Kinda shook me up, and almost ruined my day for sure.

There probably used to be a code, but I'd say its becoming a thing of the past. I wish there were more laws to hold people accountable for the way they act on the water. (plus it would be a source of funding for the KDFW or another gov't. branch) These guys weren't older than twenty, and obviously could use a class or a course on how to operate a bass boat safely. Lots of fast boats gettin in the hands of some inexperienced and immature "fisherman" lately.

Code? I don't think there is a code...just a few of us good ol' boys left that have respect for others. JMO

There may be something to be said about fisherman having a respect for each other. I have helped several boaters change a tire on a fishing boat on the side of the road. Now if it had been a ski-boat with wake boards and speakers on a rack, I may not have seen them, and accidentally driven by. LOL

Amen Dave Stewart. Thank goodness there are still enough kind hearted fellas out there to keep the faith, but it is dwindling some for sure. Respect is the key.....
