Loosing fish on Zara Spook Juniors ??

1.split rings on the trebles
2.set hook with initial strike and then hit em again, especially when they come up
3.no slack in line
4.sometimes they are just gonna come off esp if not inhaling it.
5.i also try to keep em down and have found this helps

I was having similar trouble fishing crank baits on spinning rods some time ago. What solved it for me was I switched the treble hooks out to the "excaliber" style hooks. These hooks are needle-sharp round point hooks that kind of curl sideways. When you stick a fish with these hooks they tend to "knarl in" on the fish and rarely let go. The only downside to these hooks is sometimes it is a chore unhooking them.

You know you are the second person that has told me to put split rings on the trebles, I'm gonna try this on a couple. This is weird to but it seems on my handmade ''apb'' walkers I don't loose alot of fish, nor do I on the Sammies?????

With split rings you may notice that the Spooks legs (hooks) will get tangled together occassionally. I bought a Snoopy rod with a Zebco 202 and hit the button and bow to em. "Throw this hook you fools!" Guess what? They still do. Loose drag, limber rod, hold it down... The fish don't read the same books we do. Ha !!!!

your probably already using fairly small hooks, but with smallmouth and kentucks' i always down size my hooks. It just seems like when you hook on the side of the mouth the smaller hooks can penetrate further into that skin. iduno tho, the spook jr. already has small hooks, sounds like you just got a bad streek goin.

you know i was thinkin of the puppy. i do put a 6 instead of 4 on my juniors, it looks funny but i think it works? hah maybe im crazy

are u using a slower geer ratio than in the past therefore not keeping constant tension on the line? just a thought......

this is a MUST if you have not done it. it really helps keep them from getting leverage and throwing the lure. i bet your boated fish percentage increases from this alone.

I think you all are way over analyzing this deal.

3 shots of good burbon, throw the lure, enjoy the blowup, and the aerial, and clean release with no slimey hands that make it dangerous to go back for the burbon bottle without dropping it.

No problemo...................

But,,,,also try a small treble stinger hook of the rear treble. No explanation required.......do it....win.

Mhall, sounds like your getting lots of good advice. The only thing that I can ad to this is to wait until you feel the wieght on your line to set the hook. I know, much easier said than done. When the smallies are coming out of the water with it like that I like to reel down on the fish and keep pressure on it and as soon as you feel it pulling back once it's back in the water then set the hook. If they don't get air time reel down on the fish untill your rod loads up and then set the hook. Good luck it's hard to get in the habbit of waiting, and I must admit I have found myself swinging for the fences as soon as a fish hits a topwater but what can I say it gets the blood a pumping.
