Considering this is the first time in our history that an African American was on the presidential ballot, I am not surprised, or disapointed that he recieved the majority of black votes.

Actually, not even CLOSE to the first time, but first time a black person had a SERIOUS chance of winning.......

I voted for him, and there was a part of me that was proud of the progress out country has made in terms of racial awareness and equality.

Yea, GREAT reason to vote for him...........I'd vote for a BLACK man or a BLACK or WHITE woman, had I thought their values matched what I though.

Racial equality would NEVER PLAY ANY PART.....

Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, already get MORE than they should based SIMPLY ON THEIR COLOR....and now, we've given a black man the presidency largely based on his COLOR.........talk about affirmative action.........FANTASTIC.

Whites took over this country and have historically had all of the advantages. Blacks in our country have had to fight for everything.

Segregation still legally existed until about 50 years ago. I can't imagine how some African Americans felt that lived through those oppressive times, that for the first time had the opportunity to vote for another African American.

My honor role, all HONORS classes daughter, cannot get ANY scholarships, yet one of her best friends, a BLACK GIRL, and another friend, a KOREAN GIRL, have TONS of money available. BTW......my daughter is RANKED classwise HIGHER than BOTH......My daughter sees the injustice, and is BITTER. BUT hey Affirmative Action is GREAT.

Again, they choose to segregate THEMSELVES, as much as ANY RACE AROUND. I will admit, when I was in high school and college, I had a TON of black friends, but today.........not many. Some of this is because of me, but MOST of it is because there are not many BLACK MEN in my industry.....

I do think race played some role in this election, however, I don't think it is all negative. I don't think they were voting against McCain becuase he was white.

McCain revieved the majority of votes of people of 65 - did they discriminate based on age? I am sure many of them did because they felt they relate to him better.

Blacks didn't vote AGAINST McCain at ALL......They voted FOR Obama. Had a WHITE LIBERAL Democrat been running, Many would have NOT VOTED AT ALL.....Had Kerry, or Edwards, or Clinton won the Democrat Nomination, turnouts in the black community would have been about normal. BUT, as we saw, the turned out, and voted for a black man, because he was BLACK.

McCain revived the majority of votes of people over 65.........NOT because they were WHITE or BLACK.........because the CARE about the country. AND BTW......break that demographic down by Race, and you will be SURPRISED..

Perhaps you should do some research. The law that prohibited segregation was not passed until 1954 - I don't thing 54 years is anywhere close to over 100 - and if you think that was the end of the social barriers Blacks had to overcome - You must have had your eyes and ears closed the last 50.

I may be overlooking something too, but please tell me the last time one of the two parties had a black presidential candidate on the presidential ballot on election day? I did took your advice and did some research - didn't have much luck with this one.

I don't think those cards should ever be taken out of the deck. I agree, we can and should move forward, but I don't think it ever will, nor should be forgotten. Some things in history were so awful and unjust that they should never be forgotten. The law that banned segregation was one of the first steps in the movement towards racial equality. It was easy to change a law, however, to change perceptions, thoughts and actions of individuals is much more difficult and is a process that is still continuing today. Yes, things are much better today, than they were even when you and I were kids. I really think that Obama being elected was a giant step in proving that America is the land of opportunity for all.

If a really black skinned African-American was running as a republican and the only half black Obama was running as a democrat, would the African-Americans vote for the republican because he was more black than the democrat? I don't buy that for a second. Here in rural Western Ky, racism is not even close to being extinct. I heard it daily leading up to the election - "there is no way I can vote for a ......." so they pulled the lever for McCain. I just bite my tongue and go on. Some people are just ignorant and stuck in the past. So to think racism against blacks is a thing of the past is wrong - ignoring and denying the problem doesn't make it go away. I am sure plenty of whites threw their vote McCains way based on race.

Col your wasting your time trying to explain this to them. I threw percentages after percentages at them to show how off base it was and it just goes in one ear and out the other but here I'll try again.

The black vote has always went to the Democratic ticket, I also realize why but now the black democratic vote going for Obama is being deemed as racist because he is black.

Exit polls for this elction show Obama received 95% of the black vote and 43% of the white vote, while in 2004 John Kerry received 88% of the black vote and 41% of the white vote. That is a 7% increase from 2004 so it would only take a few out of a hundred of the white vote to be cast against him because he's black to almost balance things out.

Also the numbers break down like this.

In 2004 77% of the total voters were white and 11% was African American.

In 2008 74% of the total voters were white and 13% was African American.

I agree that they should never be forgotten, it was heinous. But we should be able to get past the point where blacks that were not even alive in 54' can throw that out there and say they are being held back.

And Tim T I'll agree with you on this one. How does someone who is half black half white automatically become the first black person ever elected? Isn't he just as much white as he is black by default? I'll never understand that. And what happens when a black man with two black parents gets elected president? Will there be a debate over who really was the first black person elected?

Think about it people...No African-American could ever be President of the United States, this Africa-American would be a immigrant in this country and [LEFT][COLOR=green][FONT=serif]foreign[/FONT][/COLOR][/LEFT] born......A person has to be a True US born Citizen in order to hold the Office as US President.......

But Yes a " BLACK " American born citizen can become President...If were going to stop all the Racial tension in this day and age. Then let's start realizing just who all these people are and what Nationality they really are.

The same reason Tiger Woods is the first black man in a white sport (heard that too many times on t.v. and radio to claim that one). The half of him that is Asian is cast aside by most people, why? It doesn't fit into that government, corporate or social box that they want anyone with black skin to be in. There is a HUGE guilt trip on this country in favor of anyone who is black or has black skin. Happens everyday.

Yep if a black man from black parents ever gets into office Barry will be cast aside as a stepping stone that allowed the frist "true" black man in office. Think about something else that's just as stupid....Clinton was billed by many as the first black president? So it will be Clinton, Barry and then whoever?

I will say this and that is Barry should be 100% accepted by the blacks in this country because he is the first black skinned man who is living proof that you can be what you want to be. Take away all the politics and I can say I'm proud that we as a country can hit this milestone.(I just don't like his political views or background). Sad to say but Jesse Jackson and anyone of his cronies have tried to use hate and racism to keep their voice alive for how many years? Maybe that's another plus from Barry being the Pres. elect....J.J. will go away and take Al Sharpton and Louis F. with ya!!
