Is the river fishing below the dam as good in winter as in summer for stripers?

    Re: striper fishing novice

My brother went on Friday with his two sons and got skunked. He fished the main lake from Jamestown to Beaver Creek. Said he had them in the jumps, but by the time he got to them with the trolling motor someone had ran through them. Where is the productive bite at now, main lake , mid-section of creeks or way back in the creek?

I have been limited from going due to family concerns. I used to go all the time before kids. From what I have learned December is a transition month. They are moving off the main lake and into the creeks. It is is good idea to go as much as you can to keep up with the schools of fish. From the times we have gone before, I like the Offshore planer boards and will run two on each side of the boat. The planer board that is furthest away from the boat should be set shallower. We use a 1.5 ounce sinker with these boards. The key to catching fish is to find them and keep the bait in front of them. We will also put out flatlines straight out the back of the boat.

Also, if you fish in the day, I liked to get out about 1-2 hours before daylight and find the fish. As the day moves from morning to noon, the fish will move to the flats(bottom fishing) or out over the creek channel drops.

I'm not an authority on striper in the river below the dam, but what I've picked up from posts, reports, and trying it myself, striper fishing below the dam )all the way to the TN state line) has been off since the major dam repairs started. Water levels have been DOWN year round with little generation on a consistent basis.

I am , by no means a striper fishing expert. Last Wednesday, myself a friend of mine and RC-5 absolutly knocked their lights out. In all honesty me and my friend boated 42 with Richard catching about 12 or so. These fish were alot bigger than the ones we were catching early in the spring. It didnt matter what you threw out there to them they would hit it. Caught them on Spoons, hard swimbaits, soft swimbaits, rico's, Grubs, you name it. These fish were rolling on top. This was by far the finnest trip i had ever been on in my life.
