I'm Baaacccccckkkkkk.........
I was sick for 3 days............the weather SUCKED................the black flies fought the mosquitoes over my BIG ole BUTT...........brutal battle.
My daughter and I finally threw in the towel, and came out a few days early........
Shortest trip I've ever taken up there................oh well.........we did catch some decent smallies........NOthing like last year, but some decent ones.
A trip report will be coming soon.

Glad you're back. It's been too long since I've been up there. Maybe next year.I'm Baaacccccckkkkkk.........

What does it usually cost to head up there and fish?
that really depends.
A bigger group 6-8 guys usually costs WAY less, because you don't have to invest in a bunch of camping stuff........
If you have gear..........
* Raingear
* REALLY GOOD tent
* Cooking kit
* Stove
* Sleeping bag
* Maybe a canoe.
You can do this trip pretty cheaply..........especially to the Minnesota/BWCA side.
I'd say:
* $60 bucks for licenses permits, etc, etc
* $150 bucks travel cost (based on 6 people going). GAS/Hotel/food up.
* $100 bucks at the outfitter ( tow, showers, bunkhouse)
* $100 bucks for FOOD in the park.
* $120-150 bucks for canoe rental.......
These are the higher end of the spectrum..........My first trip I did for 300 bucks.
Now, you can usually do it for 500 bucks..........but the FUEL costs up are the biggest expense right now.

I'd be interested. You sure I wouldn't just get on your nerves?!
I've been twice to the BWCA side - once near Ely and once on the Gunflint. Smallmouth are my favorite fish to catch, but we actually didn't do all that well either time. It's probably the fishermen and not the fish, though.
It's been about 3 years since I went.
Both trips were in the spring about this time of year. I'd like to go up in early/mid September sometime.
I guess the best time is Spring?
George will probably have the definitive answer, but I think it depends.
My guess is the fishing is supposed to be a little better in the spring, but the mosquitos and bugs are worse. Plus, the traffic and crowds pick up in early June. The water can also be pretty cold in early June.
I want to try the fall because if I go in September after school starts, the crowds should be lighter. There are supposed to be less bugs and also the water should still have retained some of its summer warmth so it will be easier to hop in for a swim/bath.
So what if we made George team leader and we organize something for this fall. Heck if I can get by for less than 6 or 700 hundred dollars, I won't be in trouble with the Warden. We'll somehow make it worth Geo's wild, maybe sacrafice a liberal or something, lol, jsut kiddin guys take it easy.George will probably have the definitive answer, but I think it depends.

I don't know if I could commit yet this year, but I'd definitely consider it if a trip were planned.
I've promised a cousin of mine who lives in Minnesota that he and I would take a trip up there sometime, so I'd probably have to at least invite him the next time I go back. He's been up to that area many, many, many times.
