Angry AMMO SHORTAGE - Gotta Vent

Alright, what's the freakin deal with this ammunition scarcity continuing to drag on and on...I mean, it's beyond ridiculous. Are we not allowed to have availability to ammunition and purchase it anymore in this country?

Cheaper Than Dirt has two brands of .380ACP in stock, both of which are listed at $49.99 / 50-Round Box plus shipping! Are you kidding me? And that is for simple round ball head target ammo, not even carry stuff. It's just outrageous.

.45ACP only has a couple of brands in stock, with round ball target running in the $33-39 ballpark for 50-round boxes, and jacketed hollow points pushing $50 for 25-round boxes!!!!!!!!! WTF???? When it costs me $1 or more to pull the trigger on one of my pistols at the range SOMETHING IS WRONG. I'm not a poor fellow, not a rich cat either, but that kind of money will prevent me from enjoying the hobby - period. I understand supply and demand, but something doesn't seem right here. I understand that a whole lot of folks are hoarding ammunition and the buzz phrase is that "manufacturers can't keep up." Well, I call BS. You can not convince me that ammunition companies can't ramp up production and crank this stuff out. We built tanks and planes and ammunition at break-neck speed going into WWII in massive quantities - We know how to build stuff when we need it. Why can't we get this ammunition thing lined out? Are ammo manufacturers afraid to invest dollars into increased production because they don't want to be holding the bag if guns start getting banned?

I guess I'm just going to have to take the plunge into reloading and make all of that investment. Before I do, can you get that stuff now or is it scarce too?

It's pretty frustrating. Imagine having 18 fishing rods and you can't get any fishing line...you like 14 pound test, but all you can get is 8, and it's $300 for a 100 yard spool.

Yep chicken mcsucks fer sure. Just purchased some .22cal (1750fps) from Cabelas. Never thought I would buy any ammo from them because of the cost but I did....gotta buy it when you can find it.
To me it's all the more reason to join the NRA and help give the fellow shooters a voice in Capitol Hill.

    No kidding, this *****.

There are still three different rounds out there that are still reasonable. 7.62x54r (comparable to 30-06), 5.45x39mm (comparable to .223) and 7.62x25 (a VERY HOT pistol/subgun ammo).

All three of these are soviet ammunition but readily available and cheap. You can get the 54r for about 40cents a round, the 5.45 for 15-17cents a round and the 7.62 for less then 10cents a round!! Whats great is that the common guns that shoot these are cheap too. One can purchase a Mosin Nagant for less then $150. AK-74s which shoot the 5.45 can be pricy but can be had for as low as $500 and Tokarev pistols that shoot the 7.62x25 can be had for about $200! Oh and the Tokarev is a Soviet clone of the 1911 and that little x25 round is awesome! Its FAST and flat shooting so you can impress people with long range shots at the range...with pistol PLUS is CAN penetrate light armor!

At this point that is the answer. True to reason or not, that is the most common answer or topic.
I work part time at a large retail outlet. Most of the ammunition we recieve, never makes it to the shelf. Customers have figured out, which three nights our freight comes in and the general time it comes onto the floor for stocking, and are standing there waiting on it. We have had customers see a case of ammo on a freight pallet and try to take the whole case to the register only to throw a fit because we have had to limit customers to six boxes at a time. Just to insure that more than one customer can benefit from what we do get in.
If it makes it to the shelf, rounds such as .45's, 9mm's, 38 specials, 357's and bulk .22's are gone sometimes within hours. 40's come in on the most regular basis, and seem to stay longer. 38's and 357's, usually only come in at one box at a time. They seem to be the hardest sought.
But yes, the customers I have talked to are hording, under the thoughts that Obama will push a large tax onto ammo, making it harder and more expensive to buy.

My point is that knowing the retail public is hoarding and knowing that every spec of ammunition made in those popular calibers is never even making it to the shelf, you would think these manufacturers would be doing everything they can to keep the supply chain loaded to keep $$$$elling...are they really at capacity?

    OR...

Are they wanting to keep it scarce to drive the prices up?

It's a circle jerk in a square room...

I work with a guy that almost never shoots his 9MM but thinks obama is going to take his guns and ammo away. He buys all he can find and must have 10,000 rounds. That is why ammo is expensive and hard to find imo. I hear there is record gun sales also. People are afraid but I cant figure out why.

Because if the wacko lefties get their way, they will take away the only thing keeping this a free non-dictorship country. The lefties even tried to introduce a bill making Obama permanent president.
Like I said when the wacko's get their way,I will fight to the death to keep my guns.

The bill you are referring to has come up several times over the years. You shouldnt worry about anyone taking your guns, the NRA would be screaming their head off if they thought they were even getting close to any bill to ban anything concerning guns or ammo. You should remain calm and the NRA will let you know when to fight to your death.

I hope your joking? The administration put out false info on the guns in Mexico being our problem. The talk of assault guns being banned (I don't have or want one)? The talk of putting serial numbers on ammo?
I'm sure if I searched deep enough in my NRA mags I could find more....

Ammo shortage is of our own making. When Obama was elected folks went nuts buying it. Then there is the war. Federal is no longer making almost any commercial ammo. They are almost 100% making ammo for our guys in the military.
I am in Alaska and there is no ammo here either. Hold on to what you have and stop the scare buying. Hell if you need some ammo come on here and post it. Someone might have an extra box they are hoarding.
Between the Ammunition Identification acts going around the country and the Obama scare everyone is buying as much as they can. I have seen people buying all kinds of it a Bass Pro.. up to $400 at a time.
