    Wellllllllll.....what next!

So we drive up to party and fish at Put-in Bay Ohio. Fished the evenings from the banks in town and at the state dock, mainly with nightcrawlers. Things we caught included catfish, blue gills, rock bass, round gobys, small mouth bass, white bass, and ...........ahhhhh............................
    a SEA GULL.

    Yep.....sure did.

    Nope wasn't drinking........

About 7:30 pm, sun starting down, so I got out the good old chrome Zora Spook to see if the small mouth were up and eating. First 4 or 5 casts, I caught a couple smallies. Round about the 8th cast, I saw the sea gulls were circling over the lure as I walked it in. About 3 or 4 gulls checking it out. A couple casts later, a small mouth took a swat at the spook, missed it, 4 twitches of the lure later he tried again, and missed it again. Just then out of the corner of my eye I saw the gull in a death dive, wings folded, headed right for the lure. I froze the lure, hoping the gull would not be attracted to something sitting still..........to late Martha.......he ate the whole thing. Nailed it with a heck of a big splash, surfaced, started to try to fly away........then my drag started ripping out line. Rod tip pointing toward Mars, I started bringing in about 75 yards of line with the gull trashing about on the end of the line. Got him to the bank, a 5 foot rock wall I was standing on, and starting to lift him up. The lure had hooked him in the bill, as well as one of his webbed feet. Took some doing, but within about 3 miuntes he was flying away. I thought I was gonna have to take my fishing buddy to the emergency ward.....he was laughing so hard he stopped breathing. At that point, I decide to pack up the rods, and go hit the Beer Barrel Saloon. And believe me when I tell ya, the fishing storeis I told at the bar that night did not include birds!

Believe it or not, I had the same thing happen up on Lake Erie too, just north of Kellys Island. We were Perch fishing and my buddy caught one and was skipping it across the water and a seagull dove and got it. I laughed so hard I almost fell out of the boat. He fought it , let it take out some line, fought it some more and then decided enough is enought and jerked the gull out of the sky with one jerk. The gull did a nose dive into the water, stunned, my buddy wound it in. Thought it was dead, unhooked the gull threw it out in the lake and in about 15 seconds got up and flew off! We laughed for 10 minutes! Wish we had a video of it. This was about 20 years ago.

My buddy hooked a goose needless to say he lost all of his line, and his lure and the goose no where to be found, hated leaving an animal out there with a hook in it but thats the way it goes.

One night a buddy and I were on Nolin cruising kinda slow with a pole we had reeled in hanging over the side with a Hula popper on it when a bat smacked it...scared the pee out of us. It eventually got off....and we called an evening.

Have caught several Brown Pelicans and Gulls while shiner fishing on Okeechobee. My fishing buddy would keep a bottle of tabasco in the boat to load up a shiner for a pesky gull that would not leave us alone.
