Little late to the dance, but SSA, Medicare/Medicaid are broke and failing, so bad examples. Farm subsudsies are a tremendous waste of money in this day of the mega farm. And finally, I would argue energy is better served in the private sector. Unless I missed something LED's/TV's weren't invented by Al Gore, these were private sector, like the light bulb, IC engine, micro chip, LCD, fiber optics. Great examples of innovation are Cisco, Intell, MS, Google. Just about every govt program, while they mean well, typically lead to the "laws of unintended consequence" ... Welfare leads to unemployment, govt housing was shown lead to social demise (aka the projects), fair housing act lead to massive foreclosures....Just my 3 cents...
