Questions about Hand-held GPS units????

I had a cheap one,Etrex that the only usable function seemed to be that you could mark a point and it would help find your way back to the point.A friend has a much better one in color and good mapping that you can mark where you want to go and it will help you get there.Define what you want to use one for and they probably make one that will fit at some price.

I am happy with my Lowrance iFinder Hunt. Don't know about Etrex or even the newer Lowrances. Whatever you do, get the learning dvd that comes separate with most models. They can be pretty frustrating in the beginning. Practice a lot around home before relying on it in the field. They are an invaluable tool as far as I am concerned.

Since I bought my first boat last July that included 2 units. Now I'm trying to sell the Lowrance ifinder H20 that I bought new last spring. Hotmap excluded. Willing to sell for $100 shipped.

The best hand-held gps are GARMIN they also have the best maps that you can buy for gps. It is the best way you can go. The more you spend the better they get

I posted the same question to the board ~ year ago. Most recommended the Lowrance ifinder H20, which I purchased. Also purchased the (sp? novonics?) map chip which gives me KY, Tn, ....., lakes. Been very happy with the unit. Have no experience with the Garmin units, nor their maps. Question for Green River Time? If one compares the two maps side by side, what would be the pros and cons?

Now if you want a GPS that you are going to use only on lakes Then yes the Lowrance is the way to go. But if you want to use it going down the road in the woods or even on the water the Garmin is the way to go The Garmin Topo U.S. 2008 maps was the best that I could find. It even has all the road and yes side roads all streams creeks river lakes and so on. You get the whole USA for about $100.00 great deal to put on a garmin.

I have etrex vista h and I wish I went with lowrance, but that is just my opinion.

I have a Garmin Astro that I use coonhunting. It has everything you'll need. We make our own maps for it either very detailed with all roads or the elevation map with all roads as well. Both these maps will show the creeks & names when on the lake & leaves a trail that you can follow back to ramp. Very easy to operate & you can make waypoints as well.

Sounds like a great deal for the all around sportsman. But for me, I'm a FISHMAN, ONLY interested in the lakes. With H2O and the (novantics??sorry spelling?.... maps, I get more detail on lake topo than with any paper map I have found..Just my 2 cents.
