12-30 Just off the water Cumberland FNF

It's 4:12 and I literally just tied the boat to the dock and walked in the houseboat frustrated. The float n fly is on but I never boated a single fish.

Shimano spinning reel on a 9' Field and Stream fly rod, Suffix 30# braid to the 3 way swivel, Seaguar 15# fluorocarbon (12ft leader) to the 16th oz. Punisher jig, finished with fish dope. Standard FNF bobber.

Water is clear to cloudy and 49*. I fished Indian Creek @ bluff walls and elongated rocky points and gots bites everywhere I went. I missed about half the fish on hook set and lost the other half on the way to the boat. After about a 4 minute fight I lost a huge fish that took my confidence with her. Did I say huge? I was wrong...It was bigger than that....HUGER I guess. I'm still pissed but managed a quick thank you prayer for the fight.

I guess some days you win and some days you lose. I'll be here for three weeks so I have time to get even!

sounds like had a lot of chances, and sorry to hear about loosing the big one, and you know were and how, Ive never had any luck with a leader over 8lb test, I fnf Cumberland about 90% of the fnf season and use 6lb Magnathin all the time, and don't use a leader, and their will be days when they just don't get it real good JMO

Sounds like you have plenty of action to keep it interesting. It is frustrating when you can't seem to keep one buttoned....and the one that gets off at the boat is ALWAYS "huger", lol!

I've never f-n-fd, just read thousands of f-n-f posts here.....and the f-n-fers may correct me if I'm wrong.....but 15# fluoro seems a little heavy to me? I've heard of them using 8-10# fluoro for their leaders. The long action of the f-n-f rod, much like with fly fishing, will absorb much of the fight allowing you to use lighter lines. I am a life long fly fisherman, and I have caughten 10lb fish on 4lb line, thanks to the fly rod. Just an IFY.

Come on f-n-fers, chime in on this one.

    Floatman,

Let me know when you'll be down again. My houseboat is at Grider and I'll be here most of January.

Interesting...what time of the day were you in Indiana? I went in there around noon, but the wind was up and I couldn't hold the boat on the banks I wanted to fish. Wound up going into one of the Indian feeder creeks for a couple of hours and scratched out two short fish .

Good to hear someone and a nice one on the line. For me, 2 short fish on FNF.

I fished around Burnside (mostly South Fork) from 10 to 4 and did not boat a fish. The water in the S.Fork looks great but the North Fork is muddy.
