    Re: Shark in the Ohio.

Now you know why I won't swim in the Ohio River anymore. LOL

Back in 1916 off the Coast of New Jersey a few swimmers ended up getting bitten by what was thought to be a Great White Shark. It turned out that at the same time of year a Bull Shark has swam up a fresh water creek and grabbed a young boy several miles up the fresh water creek. A young man went into the water and was looking for the missing boy when he too was attacked by a Bull Shark.

All this has been on the Discovery Channel or the History Channel several times over the last 15 years.

My dad told me about Fresh water sharks that were in a fresh water lake in Africa.

And Bull sharks have been caught up in fresh water rivers in India and Africa.

And as the article said they have been seen as far up the Mississippi River as St. Louis, MO.

It would not surprise me at all to see them in the Ohio River anywhere.

Another reason to stop swimming in the River. Bull Sharks are agressive and like to gather at the mouth of rivers that empty into the Ocean.

yea this doesn't surprise me at all. with evidence showing they had went as far as st. louis, it is only a matter of time until someone gets attacked by one in our area. thankfully this one was dead. but i guess it will add a unique fishing element to the river??? LOL. along with those 2 headed fish....

Smile Re: Shark in the Ohio.

I caught a sand shark off the coast of New Jersey a long time ago while deep sea fishing on my Uncle's Cabin Cruiser. He had a 35 ft cabin crusor and fished in the Atlantic Ocean for Bluefish and Bonita on weekends. They have a summer cottage on the bay there. I went up there one summer and spent a month fishing and sailing with my Uncle and two cousins.

But I never figured I'd see a Bull Shark in the Ohio River back then. That was over 45 years ago.

I still trying to catch one of those two headed fish.

Bull sharks don't attack...and just because there are any type of shark in the Mississippi River drainage doesn't mean they will attack people.

Bull Sharks do attack... They are one of the more agressive species of sharks. They have killed people all over the world, Australia, USA, Africa, etc...

However, from what I read on this story...this wasn't a bull shark, but some other shark that was dumped off a boat that came from the gulf...so swim away!

yea that is completely wrong. and it doesn't mean they will attack, but the more meetings between humans and a bull shark in the ohio would only increase the probability of it. it WOULD happen, its simple math. but the fact that the shark was dead on a ramp, and its appearance, tells me that it wasn't a bull shark...but i don't know how a shark gets into the ohio otherwise?
