I KNOW that NGK BU8H is not the plug, my 200 MERC will not run on anything but that plug, my friend has a 225 Optimax and his motor would not start with the NGK BU8H, we were at the lake and he had to put his old ones back in..... he gave me the NGK BU8Hes,lol about $18 for 6.
The factory specified plug brand and type will be on the small spec stamp or sticker on the motor once you remove the cowling. Take the cowling/cover off and search for it. It has the engine serial, model #, spark plug, gap, and other useful information that will aide you when performing maintenance or repairs.
If the sticker or stamp is no longer legible, call your local Merc dealer and ask for the specs -- but be sure you have the motor serial # handy so that they can help you.
The plugs you are looking for run about $19-$22 EACH and are NGKs. I don't remember the particular part number/plug number, but I do know that you will spend a little money for them.
Also, with the OptiMax -- don't try to substitute a cheap plug in place of the expensive plugs. That particular type is stamped on the spec sticker for a reason.......One more thing, set your torque wrench to 20lbs when putting the new ones back in. Mercury calls for this amount of pressure so that the anode on the plug is in alignment with specification.![]()
Hey got a tip for you guys that can save a ton of money on plugs.Don't get them from a mercury dealer Let auto zone or adavance order them for you. Last time I replaced mine in a 01 mercury, marine dealer wanted 16 bucks apiece ,got them from auto zone for 6.50 each !!!!!!!
uh not so much...the torque is so that you dont strip the threads out of the head. torque doesnt align the plug strap...nor does it need to be reallyThe factory specified plug brand and type will be on the small spec stamp or sticker on the motor once you remove the cowling. I have a '99 2.5 l opti and the NGK iridium plugs are the pricey ones that are recommended as "heavy duty". For the 2.5 l block IZFR5G is the model plug to use but I am not sure if the 3.0 l block uses the same model. They range from $12 to $20 each or so. The last batch I bought I picked up off ebay several years back for much less...
