    Question Help with elkhorn creek?

Does the Elkghorn creek run through Lexington?

I will be in Lexington on Saturday, and while the ladies and the kids are going to the circus, I thought the guys could go fishing. I have always heard the Elkhorn was a good place to fish, but I have never been there. What are your suggestions for fishing around Lexington?

There are some good spots to fish Elkhorn in Frankfort off of 460.

Thumbs up Re: Help with elkhorn creek?

Elkhorn was a lot of fun! We ended up getting permission to cross and park on someone's property, and fished a very shallow part of the creek. That creek is plum-full of rock bass, one of my favorite fish to catch.

We caught shellcrackers, rock bass, and largemouth, but no smallies were to be found. The water where we fished never got over waist deep, and was nice and cool. If it wasn't a 3 hour drive for me, I would be fishing it very often.

I miss the elkhorn a great deal. I now live a few miles from Ky lake Dam. As good as it is here, I really miss the elkhorn. I was on it as much as I could be, and nearly every day from may - august. In my opinion a good day wading the elkhorn is as good as fishing in Kentucky gets.

Went last Tuesday. Caught several smallies in the 14"-16" range. Even the little ones are fun on light tackle. Would like to get back before all the leaves hit the water. Lots of fun and the kids had a blast. I miss getting to fish with Dad on the Big Sandy around Elkhorn City in Pike County. Grew up wading that river. Lots of good trips and memories as a youngster growing up there. Wish I could get back more often. 4 kids and all playing sports (baseball, football, golf) limits travel somewhat.

I spent my summers catfishing the big sandy and wading creeks around Virgie in Pike Co. for smallies and KY bass. Caught a ton of bass. Never forget when my brother hooked into 1 around 3 Lbs in knee deep water and she leaped out of the water over and over again and I caught her in mid-air and bear hugged her. It was the biggest I had seen at the time and was all tore up!!

Col, the next month or so is prime as far as I'm concerned. If you want to hit it, give me a shout.

I was talking about in another thread how I would like to fish here. So is there absolutely no public bank that I can fish on?

    Sglass & Magiksmallie,

Just talked to Dad (still lives outside Elkhorn City on Little Beaver Creek), caught a couple nice smallies the other day. Also caught a walleye. Remember a few years ago we got into a school of walleye around the Pond Creek bridge. Man would I like to go back this weekend and fish. Football tourny will not allow me to do so. I got so many stories of big smallies and nice walleye out of that river its not funny. My 12 year old spent two weeks there last summer and caught a 5+ smallie just up from the bridge in town that crosses the river. Got a pic somewhere if I can find it i'll post it. If not we can dream about it. LOL
