This is something that interests me a lot. If you could get a consistent bite going, it would be a great summer fishing hobby. I think you could do well at Taylorsville from what I've seen as well.

Now that Barren is back down to Summer pool I can get up on the flats and chase these guys while the wifey gets some sun! Good way to kill a hot summer day when nothing else is biting and also good target practice!! Went 1 for 5 yesterday.... Fun watching them go after the fly and eat!!

Getting that consistent bite is the "con" to it, but for me the "spot and stalk" out weigh that....for the most part... Plus, the way these guys are built you have to put the fly right on their dinner plate without spooking them.. Something about watching that fish react to your fly and start chasing it down is pretty cool to watch....
I can't keep up with you Bass guys anway...By the time the wifey wants to get to the lake for sun time I pass more boats that are headed home! There's plenty of these dudes out mudding and tailing in the middle of the day so if I screw up on one or two I can move on down to the next bunch.... haha
Thanks for the tip on Taylorsville! There's still a bunch of flats on Barren I haven't hit yet..
Am I the only one who expected to see pics of the wifey sunning herself and then get disappointed?![]()
I agree 100%! I will get weird looks when I tell guys I'm going Carpin' but it's only because they have no idea what a blast these fish are. They fight harder than any other fish in our waters. I've had them break hooks, drag poles in the water, snap lines, and even one snap a rod. VERY exciting, action packed fishing! Hope to see more of these reports!
In the summer at the warm water discharges, I used to target them quite a bit. They hit small jigs in moving water, and they dont give up. Yeah that initial run is something when they feel that hook.
Carp of the fly rod is a blast! WTG!

I'm interested in learning this and yes Taylorsville would be a good place to try, especially in Van Buren section. I fly fish quite a bit, but just started targeting some carp in the creeks. Which flies do you use? This has been my biggest challenge so far. I assume you don't mind sharing since this is a rough species.
Thanks.
Don't mind at all!!! It's the Rainy's Carp -TeaserI'm interested in learning this and yes Taylorsville would be a good place to try, especially in Van Buren section. You can google "carp on the fly" and get tons of info. This link has good info on the different types of moods these fish can be in.

For me mudders are in deeper water and I either don't feel the "take" or don't see it so I've missed more fish that way. I like'm really, really shallow so you can watch them hunt down the fly and take it!! Still learning a ton every time I'm out! This weekend is starting to look crappy though...
When I fish Trammel Creek behind our farm in Allen County I always see cruising fish, but I usually spook them making too much noise wading... I think creek fish seem spookier though... Never really targeted them with my 3/4 wt though....This guy was working around a tree and would come out look around and then go back around the tree... When he came out I lead him and was doing short strips as the fly went right in front of him. He saw the fly, turned on it and sucked it up instantly!! Very cool eat!!!
