Hey, what do you guys use for throwing these topwater baits.

I just pulled an old curado green out of retirement........spooled it with 15lb mono and matched it to a 6ft medium.........

How about you guys......what do you use.

The 15 is a little light for me. But, I like to throw around alot of wood.

I throw all my topwater baits on 40lb Power Pro braid. You can cast it a mile and get the same action at 50yds that you get at 10 yds because it doesnt stretch and give. Also, if you hook a log or a limb you can usually bend a hook out before it breaks. I throw a Rico a lot and usually dont like loosing those. Mono line will work as it floats and stays on top of the water which results in good bait action but it is "spongey" and your line will stretch a LOT at long distances.. Flourocarbon sinks which kills topwater bait action. Just my thoughts..

That is what I was thinking..............I need the spongy action too....I've had issues with pulling the bait out or ripping it out, which causes lost fish.

AND I had been using flouro which sinks......I might use braid as suggested.

A good solution is to use both braid and mono. Use braid with a 16" mono leader. You get the action and castability with the braid and then that little bit of stretch to keep from rippin the bait out with the mono. .

I use a 6 1/2 foot soft tip rod, medium action, they tend to load up well on the soft tip. I don't use that Donkey string like some guys, I don't see the point. Usually 12lb low vis green mono. The stretch will help you keep from ripping the bait free.

I use 14lbs Suffix mono on a Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier baitcaster and a Carrot Stix medium action 6' 8" rod. The softer actioner and lighter line keeps the bait from getting pulled out of their mouth.

I spend a lot of my time on the water thowing these two baits. Nothing beats the blast these baits get. I like to use 15lb big game on a large spool reel. The rod I use is a med action 7' GL2, its a real buggy whip. I have increased my hook to land ratio big time. A trick I always use is to take bow string wax and coat my line the last 5' keeps line on top like braid. Between the limber rod and the mono, most fish will have the bait fully engulfed, and seldom have a hook rip out. Try it.

The donkey string or braid helps with a hookset when long distance,and when a striper hits it at ten mph going the other way.
I use a glass two handed seeker type rod with 30 lb evo braid,5600 c can cast 50 yards to a surface bust with say a gsplash.Power pro is also a good line for that.
Glass and slower tip keep the bait from overrunning itself to some degree and can worked even faster.
Recently took a carrot stix and tried it fast tip and it overran on almost every cast,will walk quickly and overrun its own hooks.
So you want a rod more suited for crankbaits and topwater than a fast tip,for any bait that walks much.Spook is a great old school bait.
With that old glass rod i had made,ten yrs or so ago it flexes halfway to the handle and loads the rod like a fly rod,yet has the stuff to land a 30 pd drum if it inhales a 1 oz spro trap,does double duty when no surface action.
Ive also had stripers steal a 18 dollar spro at the rod tip(on another rod) when using 17 lb mono,hasnt happened with the braid.

Never thought of that, but it seems it would work. What knot do you use to attach the braid to the mono? Would a surgeons knot work?
