Looks like Obama favors the Chinese over Americans.

This ain't no good at all...I wonder what contracting company and design firm is associated with the new bridge being built in Madison, Indiana? I now wonder the same thing about the new bridge that will be built in Louisville?

    Dang it!!

Blame Obama when he's at fault, but this has nothing to do with Obama. The decision was made by California DoT to turn down federal money so they didn't have to hire American.

Geo, this is small comfort, and this whole thing pisses me off too, but since they did turn down those federal $$ in order to hire the Chinese firms, it's probably not much, if any, of your tax dollars or mine paying for it; it's California state tax money.

I know and this is NOT an Obama issue, BUT......it is a **** shame that there are 10,000 workers in CA that could do that work.

I'd love to see a NON UNION group make a bid and see if the can compete with the UNION folks on this.

AND before my union brothers start bitching up a storm about this........do YOU suppose those COMMUNIST CHINESE are doing any better job than someone NON union here. Do you think they even give a RIP??

    Just asking.

I have some **** fine folks in unions but I can say when it comes to the higher ups in any organization the corruption runs amuck. Back room deals, insider info and who knows what else goes on but I am amazed that with all the griping about China by our politicians on the national stage, our unemployment and occupy wall street crowds how did this not stay American.
    I couldn't find/read the article.

If it's a Chinese company that hires local workers, okay by me. Hope they bid so low it makes the I-65 bridges project affordable enough to do.

Oh, by the way, does that amortize some of our debt to them?

That's just it, it's not. Chinese firm, Chinese workers. Once the job is done, all the money it cost has basically been siphoned out of our economy, into China's.

Wake up! Korean workers are doing or were doing a lot of the reconstruction of Iraq, WHY? american contractors hired them. Some of those same contractors made millions off the american tax payers.Yet these guys hire lobbyists who like to keep the war pot bubbling.

I know this isn't NObama's fault. But what I do blame him for is this...since it's been made public about who is doing the work, I blame NObame for not following these projects a little longer to see for himself who's was awarded the contract, how many chinese blue-collars were hired, etc...cause after he was on the podium bragging about how many american workers would be put back to work, I think he should have gone straight back to those people responsible for seeking bids and ask to see the bid documents as well as see the list of bidders.

If everything was on the up and up for the bidding process then fine, the China man whipped our ass again. Even still, I think NObama should follow up and talk with all unsuccessful bidders and ask them if they were comfortable with their numbers...Guess I'd like to see the spread, to see how far out the first loser was.

I agree with you Chub, and I'd like to see the other bids too, BUT...

So what if the Chinese bid was a little lower than the US firm's bid? I've lost government tire bids for the department of defense when I was the lowest bidder, because I was bidding against a company owned by a minority, or a woman, or a company in an economically challenged zone. Their bid was higher, but they WON, because our government handicaps the bidding process to allow them advantages because of who they are. I could have provided the tires at a lower cost to the government, with better service, and more timely delivery...and I lost because one of my competitors was owned by a black woman in a rough area of a large city. I'm sure that was no coincidence either.

I'm not saying that's right, but our own Federal government can do things like that, but we can't handicap the bidding in favor of American firms getting these shovel-ready projects on our own **** soil even if they are a little higher than the Chinese bids? The Chinese are price whores that don't pay their people squat and don't pay the taxes that our companies do. They screw up pricing in the global markets. THAT'S WHAT THEY DO!!! They dont play fair. Instead of giving Americans some desperately needed work, we sold out to the **** price whores of the world to save bucks. We do it on everything else, so might as well here too, right?

I hope the **** bridge collapses into the river. (With nobody on it, of course....except maybe the jackasses who gave the bid to red China.)

Re: WHAT.......China is building bridges HERE.......WTF....

The fact that these Chinese firms are doing it cheaper doesn't justify it, and the officials involved are being incredibly short-sighted. I guess they think they've helped their state's economy by saving them some money on this contract, but I believe that even if they had paid more for it, the long-lasting economic benefit to the state would have outweighed the extra money they put into it. Those dollars would have increased wealth in California instead of China. And it's not a level playing field when it comes to bidding, because the Chinese companies are owned by their government. And the guy's statement about how hard it is to find welders just doesn't ring true to me. Seems to me that if they really put out the word that welders are needed, they'd find them.
