Best place to launch a kayak at McAlpine dam?

I was wanting to take my Coosa to McAlpine dam but wasn't familiar with that area. Is the Harrison Avenue boat ramp the best place to launch a yak? And is it safe to fish there in a yak? I was wanting to try and catch some Hybrids or whites and try for some sauger. I'll be traveling from Lexington.

I'd launch at the Intepretive Center instead.

That will give you access to quite a few good areas, and if they have any gates partially open at the top, there will be some decent oxygen rich water coming through the gates. That will being baitfish and FISH to those areas. Should be able to catch largemouth, and maybe a smallie or two, and a bunch of whites.......you might even get into some sauger, but I doubt that.

Where is the Intepretive Center located at? Im not to familiar with that stretch of water. Is there a ramp? The Harrison Ave is right by the lock that's why I suggested that ramp.

There is an upper and lower gate......the upper is up by the intepertive center. Basically instead of heading down to harrison ave, and the ramp, go up towards the second street bridge areaa. the inteperetive center is part of falls of the ohio state park........

Indiana or KY........either works there....you just cannot go up the creeks on both sides..

But the way I understand it, you are fine to fish the locks, etc, etc with either license.

Yea, park at the top........carry down the stairs, or the wheelchair ramp. Do it ALL the time with my royalex and my kevlar canoe.

    Nice workout too
