we did really well today but not up top ...we were by the lower spillaway ....it is not dangerous there for a beginner in the boat ....look for deep water and that is the ticket today we were getting them in 36-40ft of water..vertical jigging...no minnows on our jigs .Water temp was 48 degrees.. OK I'll give you my secret we were using home made blade baits .We got some really big sows over 3lbs !!!! ANd they had eggs in them ! I thought they didn't spawn until February usually...
We began to catch sauger while striper fishing back in Sept and then I told my buddy this is gonna be a good sauger year ...

Way to go there Jay!! I need to hit the river again before it gets too cold for my old bones.
You can get directions to the museum on the Internet and park around back for a fee of two dollars. Then walk towards the museum and there is a big stair case walk down it till u get to the rive and walk right the the beds start to curveFisherman14. Thx for the info!! Here goes. Where do you park? What ramp and how do you get to the fossil beds area? Is it usually crowded? What do they usually catch near mcalpine discharge. I have seen a ky afield there catching white bass. Would love to catch a sauger!! Never caught one!! Thanks for any I to for a first timer!!
What museum are you referring too? Is this at the GRC state park? Where is the lower spill way and the bear traps? Do you recomment the stairscase and the bank or launch a boat and do some jigging near the bear traps?
Are the bear traps near McAlpine discharge area?
Sorry for all the questions, but thanks so much for the great info.

I am typically a striper guy on cumberland, but am pretty poor at that as well.

The museum is at the upper dam. The lower dam is across from the boat ramp in Clarksville at the George Rogers Clark cabin.
The "bear claws" are the discharge area on the lower dam.

My PC crashed a while back so I had to once again download Google Earth to get a photo of the lower dam area.
That being said, Google Earth is pretty cool. It's a free download. Once you have it downloaded and running, just type in McAlpine Dam and you're there. You can then zoom in or out and travel up or down the river.
Sorry about my squiggly arrows pointing to the places I wanted to inform you about.
