Laurel River lake Tournament

Well guys I need help. I am on my local high school fishing team and we have an open tournament in Feburary on Laurel river launching out of Holly Bay marina. I have never been to the lake much less launched a boat. All I know from my research is that it is a deep clear water lake that produces nice smallies but I also hear it's a tough one to fish. If any of you guys can help me out and throw me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

The words "clear, deep, and tough to fish" would be an understatement! I was raised in a subdivision a 1/2 mile from the 312 boat ramp and have fished Laurel for as long as I can remember (the national forest boundry runs along the back of my parents house, and in the fall and winter I could see the lake from my parents sundeck). The phrase "nice smallies" would also be an understatement . I will try to private message you this evening. If I were you, I would schedule some trips to laurel to try to get a feel for it!
