    Smaller, Slower Boats

I’m I wrong when I say it is not how big your boat is, but how you use it. Where have we heard that comment before? It just may not be the first guy to a spot who gets the money. Guys with smaller slower boats with a boat load of knowledge may be the ones who come out on top at days or nights end. It may be the guys with more maneuverable boats, especially in shallow, hard to get to water, who have the advantage. It’s not always the guy who is the fastest, who comes in first. It reminds me of an old guy I played tennis with years ago. I never won one set off of him because he used my power to his advantage by lobbing the ball high into air to slow my fast pace game down.

NO...you aint wrong!! I wish I had $40k+ laying around for the big fast boat....but I dont.

And your tennis analogy cracked me up....I played a guy in my tennis league back 30+years ago. He was a 50-60 year old and he constantly kicked my butt. I was 18 and by the end of the match I was soaked and worn out....he never broke a sweat and barely moved the entire match.

It sounds like the same guy, Russell Music from Prestonsbury back in the 70's. I will nevr forget him. He wore long pants, white T shirt and smoked a cigarette while he played, but when it came to placing the ball, he could make you start talking to yourself. Like you said it seem like he didn't have to run much, but I sure did. He won a lot of tennis tournaments in his day. He was one a kind and great person.

Hmmmm great thought and yes at times it works out but my experience is that if you have more tools at your disposal and know how to use them (pre-fishing properly from the tourney location, utilizing boat speed and stability on big water) you can come out on top more often. Sometimes...Simple things like fishing longer in the afternoon during an afternoon bite because you can run faster back to the weigh in, Or getting there faster for the morning bite before others because of your fast boat helps. I fished tournys out of 70mph boats and Pondhoppers with 5hp motors and there were many times that the draw of your takeoff made the difference. Especially with rules in place that allow you to anchor on a spot and fish means getting there first really matters.
Given the choice, and money wasn't an issue, I would have a large boat with a big motor but I'm not rich so I make the best with what I have!

Im taking youve never tournament fished ky lake. You get a north or south wind of much substance and that smaller slower boat will be stuck in whatever bay the tournament launched out of. However, on the smaller lakes ive been beaten plenty of times by guys in john boats and smaller aluminum boats

I remember when I fished KBF tournaments (before it got split up). If we were fishing the Ohio River at Carrollton a lot of guys would run to Louisville and if were launching in Louisville they would run to Carrollton. To me it seemed a waste of fishing time.

It just depends on the circumstances. I've seen where both ends come out on top before. It all boils down to how YOU fish and how YOU use your own boat.

There are guys in my club that have the big 21' dream boats and a few of them have the 12' fishing boats. While each has it's advantage. It all comes down to time on the water and experience. Most of the guys in the big boats jump from place to place and the small boats tend to fish more slowly and cover the area thourghly. At the end of the day what counts is how big your bag is not your boat..
