    Lake Cumberland Gar Problems

Anyone have problems with gar hitting your shad when striper fishing? I've had it happen in the past, but seems like this year the big gar are everywhere and they pull the planer board down then let go. When I check the hook my shad has teeth marks on it. I believe it to be gar because I've seen them on the surface right before or after this happens. Sometimes they will pull on the boat and cut the line with their teeth. I've lost a lot of hooks this year due to this. Tell me I'm not the only one...

I don't do much live bait fishing but I had one cost me a Lucky Craft pointer and an expensive Falcon rod. Long story and it was mostly my fault as I asked for it..........but, lol.

They are everywhere down there now I see schools of hundreds of them sometimes. There is one double secondary point I fish in West Fork creek that used to be a smallmouth hot spot for me, the Gar moved in by the gazillions and that spot is ruint now. I have no idea why the Gar love that spot but they do, bait I suppose. To bad somebody can't kill about a million of the stupid things.

to answer the original qusetion...yes it does seem they are "slicing" more live "shad minners" than normal.

i guess the lake level coming back up helped the gar too lol.

I haven't tried them but I imagine they would taste pretty good. I always heard people say they're eggs were toxic so they wouldn't touch the fish because of it. Idk about you guys but I wouldn't eat the eggs anyway. Not a big caviar fan lol

Man that must be some foul fish to make a drum taste like a lobster. I'll try just about any kind of food once but hopefully it's not as bad as you say. As far as catching the stupid things I've been really successful this year for some reason. They've got my shad a bunch and I've caught several off a roostertail. Really annoying when they're stealing bait. The only time I like gar around is when I've got a bow in my hand
