It could be your power packs on it. I had the same problem with an older mercury. It took forever to get on plane but ran great once you got there. It ended up being the power packs had to be replaced. Not cheap, but fixed the problem.

I have a 1985 110hp Evinrude. All of a sudden it is bogging down coming out of the hole but once it does plane out it runs like a scalded dog. Any ideas?

Is the power packs something I can replace myself or is it best take it some where? If that is the problem how much is not cheap?
My buddies boat was doing the same thing. The float was stuck in one of the carbs. Idling out to the take off it would load up with fuel, but once it took off it ran fine. Cheap fix it thats the problem...KP
It won't be the powerpacks. A powerpack problem would keep you from getting up to speed.
It's probably a fuel problem. The floats that someone mentioned would be an excellent place to start looking.
Mine was doing the same thing. I have a 98 Merc 90hp, it has a 4 blade prop on it and I thought that could have been the problem, but before I started to make big dollar repairs or replace the prop, I did a couple of cheaper things, First I changed the fuel filter, it cost lees than 20 and then changed the plugs, replacing them with NGK's and also went to a higher octine fuel and also started usung Merc oil in the fuel.My boat does not bog down any more and comes up quick and runs great. Check these simple things out first and it could save you a lot.
do what bobby h said,if you start changing parts your self start at the cheapest, plugs will probably cure it,as said with the power packs usually they show up on the top end.be sure all the plug boots are tight sometimes they get bumped off the plug a bit then it won't jump fire to the plug til you get some rpm built up.If you are running champion plugs cross them to NGK.
i agree with the two replys befor me also those powerpacks are not cheap and once you buy them they are yours. i would hate to see someone spend that kind of money and it be a clogged up fuel line or just need a good tune up.
probably $300 or more to have it fixed, yes you can do it just mark your wires.the only thing is if you take to someone who has the tools they can check your trigger, coils and packs to keep you from spending a ton changing out parts, then it turning out to be a carb, fuel related problem.
I just suggested the powerpacks. I did not want him to go out and just buy them without checking all options. I had the same thing happen with an older motor I had and it turned out to be the powerpack. Just trying to help another boater with suggestions.
my old 92 Johnson did that too. After 5 or 6 carb jobs and 2 tune ups, I discovered that if I bumped the choke in for a split second while getting up on plane, it wouldn't bog down. Sadly I sold the boat a few weeks after discovering this and I had the problem for well over a year.
sounds like a fuel flow or control problem or a ignition Timing adjustment. timing needs to go from slightly retarded to advancing upon increase in rpm. perhaps low rpm synchronization needs adjustment.
