    Talking Sauger: Super Sunday/Black Monday

Checked the board early this morning before heading out to Newburgh Dam on the Ohio for some Sauger fishing. "Gar's" post on his fishing success this Sunday at Cannelton got me pumped!! Picked up my bucket of minnows, box of jigs, etc. and got to the river around 6:45 am and fished until 4:15 pm. Decided not to take the boat (may have been a mistake, as I could have fished deeper water). Fished from the shore along the wing dam. Well to make a long story short, I caught my limit of 10 sauger, problem was there were a box of "cigars". All caught on medium shiners. Cast my blade bait (silver buddy) with no hits and finally lost it to a hang up. Bottom line, I just could not find the big girls. Others guys on the bank seemed to be having the same problem, whether fishing shiners or casting jigs, the majority of the fish caught were "cigars". Out of ~ 15 fishermen on the bank, maybe 2 or 3 had a couple/three keepers over 12 inches. Boaters fishing the same general area including the "sand bar" across from the wing dam did not appear to be doing any better. Water clarity was pretty good for the Ohio (~ 1-2 foot) and water temperature was reported to be 36 degrees.

"Wags", from your post, looks like we were playing with the same deck! Well, I guess that is fishing! (But I'm taking the boat next time!) Hope some of you did better today....but there is always tomorrow...Yep, I'll be checking the weather and heading out again.

    Good Fishing to all,

    Gary

Need help. Have never been to Cannelton. Where is the nearest boat ramp and how do I get there. I would be coming from, let's say Owensboro, going past Lewisport, Hawesville and then ........?

Maybe we can hook up later this week or next, your boat or mine? Only way I know to catch the Big Bite is to be there. Don't want to hear "yesterday".

    Good Fishing,
    Gary

What about fishing from the Indiana side? Where would be the best place to put in? What would be the best area to fish? Lots of questions but have never fished the river and need all the info I can get.

Boone look at the water activity on this page. You can see that the water level in your area was dropping while you were there. The forcast shows a steady rise durring the next few days, might be worth trying again.

    Good Luck

If you plan on fishing Newburgh Dam from the bank, you will need to drive over to the Kentucky side and fish on the "wing wall". If you are in a boat, then you can launch at either or these two Indiana ramps; Newburgh (unless the river comes up) or Angle Mounds. Neither ramp has a dock this time of the year, so be prepared to deal with the current getting the boat in and out of the water! As a last resort, you can launch out of the Alcoa dock at Yankeetown into the creek, then go down river and lock through the Newburgh dam.

Thanks for the info Gary but I was thinking of fishing the Cannelton area with a boat. Is there a ramp at Cannelton? Was thinking of driving over to the falls but the thought of shoulder to shoulder changed my mind real quick.

Rap, there is a nice ramp in hawesville. Not sure of the street name but you have to cross the rr tracks and go through the flood wall. (maybe the third street on the right if you're coming from the bridge and go straight at the light instead of turning left going up the hill).

I went sunday with a friend to cannelton to fish from the bank. Got there early (5:30ish) and set out 8 rods. Picked up a couple cigars before daylight then it really picked up for an hour or so. Fish were small, easily caught our two limits but only kept 15 or so because of the size. Lots of people and boats too so you need to get there EARLY to stake your claim. PLan on going again sat mornin (gotta sweet talk the wife ).

Talked to the freindly conversation officer before we left. He was stating that this could be it for the bank fishermen on the Ky side because of a hydroelectric plant is to be constructed on the site. From what I have researched they plan on starting construction in march of this year. He said that access will probably be restricted from that time on (NO fishing from the shore). We will see what pans out, but I have a bad feeling that fishing will be no more allowed from the bank. I don't believe that they could keep boaters away but who knows. We may be losing some of the best sauger/catfish/striper fishing from the bank in the state with this move
