Re: Float N Fly - Kentucky River

Since we are on FnF subject and I didn't want to start a new post, I have yet to try the FnF, but I saw some of you post about fishing it on Stoner Creek, and I assume the same applies to the Kentucky River, I was just wondering what fly patterns you all have had luck with, basically gonna be making my first attempt with this on Stoner and was hoping to maybe get a little advice. thanks

Try white and chartruece to start, get some with blue in them and some with a little strand of flash in them. The guys at Back waters are good at helping with colors. I think M&K here in town has some too.

The ramp at Steele Branch is excellent... one of KYFWR's more modern facilities.

Hazards? YES! Stay in the middle of the river as there are plenty of submerged stickups and laydowns pretty far from the bank in places. Also, there is a creek upriver of the ramp a few miles (Stoney Creek) that took a huge rainfall about 3 years ago. There was a tremendous flash flood that wiped out a house and killed a woman and her child who were inside. The creek carried alot of rock during that storm and dumped it into the river at the mouth. Right now there is only about 2 feet of water above the highest part of the hump, which is closest to the OPPOSITE side of the river from the mouth of the creek. There are also about 4 laydowns (some submerged) scattered all across the river starting at the mouth, and a couple immediately down stream, even one about 100 yards. When I see the laydown in the middle of the river, I throttle down and idle past the whole mess, hugging the left bank and can find 8 to 10' of water. Be careful as the hump will be very close on the right side. This part of the river has taken at least three lower units that I know of, and if you know anybody from the Owen County Bass Club, I think they can fill you in more as it was during one of their tourneys.

I don't have any experience with F-n-F, so can't help there. Let us know how you do.

    Goodluck.

Thanks for the info. I'll report back Sunday night after we get back. Is the Elkhorn up or down the river from Steele Branch and how far?

Fellers stay warm sorry I'm going to miss it. I would be short on fishing time with the drive added in.
Splitshot we'll try it again sometime.

No worries Stoner - We'll hook up at Fryman's one day when it's more liquid.

I just got in from date night with Mrs. Splitshot and saw this. Billy, I'm going to bail on you and Elnut in the AM, but much obliged for the boat ride offered.

I hope you boys find some FNF fish on the river! I'd pack a sweater. I'll call you sometime in the AM and get a status report.

Sounds like somebody already found a hawg or two at Dale this week...
