ive got a problem that maybe someone has had and can tell me what to do. the reel works fine except sometimes if i get hung up or have a fish on it will release the spool and cause one heck of a backlash. the reel was gave to me from a fishin buddy and i dont want to not use it. any ideas on what is going on?

Man I would think that the anti reverse gear is stripped. I'm not an expert by no means.

Send it back to Shimano, or call customer support first. I think there is a recall on it and you may get a new Cardiff to replace it. Seriously.....

I'm not totally for sure. I would check into it though. Go to www.shimano.com and click on North America or United States. Then find the phone number for customer support and check with them. Let me know how it comes out for you.........
