I've taken spinning gear for most of my trips. When fishing out of a canoe, I find them a little easier to manage, especially in the wind.
The couple times I have taken bait casters, I've been happy with them, but I found myself more often than not using spinning gear instead.
July is a Tough time up there.......Eyes may be tough, but you should be able to hammer plenty of the other toothy critters.
Can you guys take live bait? When we did a flyin, there was a small "bait" lake on the property and we'd bait minnow traps and get darters that we used for bait for walleyes. THAT really helped quite a bit. I don't think we ever caught eyes on the flyin trips on artificial.
