With all the rain discussions, I thought I would change the subject.
I read in the Courier Journal that the KDFW spent $3,400 of our hunting and fishing license fees on a Louisville Bats 4-game promotional package. After reading the article I have mixed feelings about how this money was spent and the returns WE'LL get from it. I say WE, because that's whose money the KDFW spent on it. The article outlines the following as what the money was spent on:
- 120 tickets to four games for the department to distribute
- The right to have a department rep to throw out the first pitch a two or more games
- Department promo's on stadium video boards
- Interviews of department reps on radio
- Discounted admissions to the four games for fans showing hunting/fishing license
MOST of these items, I feel, are a worthwile expendature - promoting the outdoors, getting the name of KDFW out to a multitude of people, the importance of the department itself, and etc are all positive PR for KDFW and a good use of our money.
HOWEVER, perks such as having a suite, 120 tickets, the right to throw out the first pitch...those are perks that I think are a mismanagement of OUR money. The article didn't outline how much $ was spent on the different items - but a suite for 4 games as well as a total of 480 tickets is going to cost quite a bit of money...that's not what our license fee's need to go toward. Some may say it's the price you pay for doing business, but in this economy every penny counted is a penny saved...not spent on baseball games.

Advertising isn't cheep and certainly not free. I have no problem with it. The auditor, which kinda reminds me of that west coast witch from California that headed the U.S. senate last year, is just trying to make a name for herself.
I dont mind the advertisement.. and the tickets... but do agree that the suite is a bit much??

Would be nice if we all were overreacting.
1) Boat patrol checks a boat fishing notices kids wearing life jackets all safety equipment good. Gives the family a ticket for each to a game.
2) Uses the suite tickets to invite a disabled hunter/fisherman and family to enjoy a game.
Too much to ask.

If you go through an audit like KDFWR went through and that is all that is found (keep in mind, there was nothing illegal or unethical found about the expense) then it seems KDFWR is running a pretty clean ship.
I would say that there are less and less young people getting involved in hunting and fishing. With this being said, I feeling like some good public relation would be very beneficial because if few young people get involved, then the money taken in from the sale of licenses is going to decline. With this decline in sales, then programs within the KDFW will have to be scaled back or completely dropped unless those of us that enjoy hunting and fishing are willing to pay more in fees. I, for one, think that this was a good expenditure.
Having worked in sports and promotions previously I would like to bet that the suite is part of the package aimed at profitable businesses. When KDFW came along and asked for a sponsorship package in their budget this is probably what the Bats already had going. Agreed, they could have rejigged a deal without a suite but I can't see the big deal about it unless it is obviously misused as some kind of kickback or worse.
Hope they consider supporting the other MLB farm team in the commonwealth too!

Does Mills know about this, lmfao.................
I would be upset if our wildlife was mismanaged or they were inas big a budget crisis ad the rest of the government. But the fact is, KDFWR is top notch and I am happy with the job they are doing, douse this is a way to say thank you to game wardens who go above and beyond at their job, or to give back to those who pay for their licenses every year.
The Bats gave KDFWR a great deal. The cheapest suites are $800 a night. Add in 120 tickets and all the promos and I'd say KDFWR got a lot of bang for the their buck.
