    CL Striper Report (Fri-Sun )

Haven't been out here for a while, usually bass fish smaller lakes on private property and don't have a lot of good information to share on the larger lakes. I do try to make CL 2 or 3 times a year for striper. Anyway, I did make it down this past weekend. Fished hard for 3 days, just before sun-up to right after sun-down. 2 fish, 28" and a dinker, C&R. A little dissapointing. Fished 8 rods w/ 6" gizzards anywhere from 20'-50'. Stayed on main lake between Jamestown and Beaver. Also, fished mouth of Wolf and Beaver. Water temp between 64-65. Had primo bait, winds were light, and 2 fish! Really thought this would have been a better trip. Have the fish already moved back in to the creeks? Thinking about giving it another try in mid-December. I'll post again if I do.

Who knows. I caught five 20" fish at the same time near the bug wood narrows early Sat afternoon. My bait was from 45-65. Then Sun caught one casting about 10 am past 76 falls in Indian, then caught two about a half mile from there with bait at 45. Again all about 20" fish There has been tons of small threadfins in the back of the creeks for some time now.
From what I have been hearing you did alright. The school I ran into at bug woods was super huge but I guess they were all small.

    Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the feedback. You mentioned "tons of threadfin in the creeks". I always use gizzards because they are the biggest and usually easy to net! Am I better off using threadfin this time of year? I've also heard "match the hatch" but figured that would only come in to play late spring/early summer after shad have spawned??? Threadfin, gizzard, alewife, does it even matter?? Seems to me a striper would prefer a 6" gizzard before a 2" threadfin 365 days a year!! Any advice/tips on bait to use depending on time of year would be much appreciated!

This year the threadfins I have seen in the backs of the creeks are borderline too small to use. A few years ago they were larger this time of the year, easy to catch in the morning and after noon, real easy to keep alive and I did pretty good with them. Many don' like to use them for various reasons.

I don't know the answer to your question but if I had gizzards in my bait tank right now I would be a happy camper. Maybe scale back to smaller bait when the water gets cold.

Where are you getting your gizzards?

Taylorsville. Not too far out of the way from my place in Floyds Knobs to CL. Always worth it. I'm usually pulling out in less than an hour w/ 8 or 9 dozen, 6-7". Have a 30g SBT so the bait always stays in great shape. Just add salt, bait saver, and turn up the oxygen! I swear I think they'd last a week in that tank. Never lost the first one.

guessing but sounds like a 30 gallon shad bait tank....

i went for them the other day... caught about 6-7 in about 45 min period.... no size to them all around 20 in mark.... broke off on one that guessing should have kept.... had fun slow rolling swim baits

    HB,
SBT=Super Bait Tank. It's manufactured by Ron Vest in North Carolina. A little pricey, but a couple of the guides said it had the best filtration system and was the best shad tank on the market. From my experience, I'll have to agree. Ron has no website but here is link to the instructions that come with the tank, includes contact info and prices:

By the way, Ron Vest was great guy to deal with, took the time to answer all my questions, returned my calls, and lots of good advice!

Those are great tanks. I wish I would have taken mine to Cumberland this weekend. We had a tough time but managed a few with spooks and doll fly's but a Smack Jack took the biggest fish in the brief jumps we found. Mostly short fish but we took a pair of 29" fish. Fish were moving fast and appeared between half way back the creek and the head of the creek chasin the small bait. Water 63 on main lake and 60 in the head.
