Cedar Creek Lake to receive first stocking of rainbow trout on Oct. 2

FRANKFORT, Ky. - FRANKFORT, Ky. Kentucky anglers will have a new trout fishery to enjoy during the cooler weather months. Rainbow trout stockings will begin at Cedar Creek Lake in Lincoln County Oct. 2.
The fisheries division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will stock 12,000 rainbow trout at three sites: the ramp at the dam; the ramp on old U.S. 150, located in mid-lake; and at the fishing access area in the upper lake, located adjacent to the KY 1770 bridge. Each site will receive 4,000 trout.
"The trout look great," said Gerry Buynak, assistant director of fisheries for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "They are about 10 inches. Because of the popularity of Cedar Creek Lake, we expect to see good returns for anglers."
Another stocking of 9,000 trout will follow in February.
"We should have these fish all the way into June of 2013, when the water grows too warm for trout," said Jeff Ross, assistant director of fisheries for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.
Fisheries personnel plan to conduct a creel survey on Cedar Creek Lake and a concurrent angler attitude survey. They also plan to tag 600 of the trout to determine angler utilization of the fish.
"We strongly encourage people to return the tag if they catch a tagged trout," said Dave Dreves, fisheries research biologist for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "We have four metal boxes around the lake where anglers may get an envelope on one side of the box, fill out the information and a slot on the other side of the box to deposit the envelope."
The boxes will be located at the stocking sites and also at the Cowan Road boat ramp. The envelopes are postage paid. Anglers may take them home to fill them out, then send them back to Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. Anglers must include their name, address, phone number and whether they kept the trout or released it.
"Those who participate will receive a pewter fish pin," Dreves said. "They also are entered into a monthly drawing for cash prizes."
A total of nine drawings will be made each month: one $100 winner, one $50 winner, two $25 winners and five $10 winners. "You stay in until you win," Dreves said.
Buynak also encouraged anglers who catch these fish to harvest them.
"Adult anglers must have a trout permit to harvest trout," Buynak said. "A trout permit is included in the senior/disabled license and the Sportsman's license. Buy a trout permit and take these fish home and eat them. Trout will likely die after catching and releasing them."
These stockings will be conducted over a three-year period. After three years, the program will be reevaluated to determine whether to continue the stockings.

Question Uhhhh ... just curious, but ...

OK ... so you need a Trout Stamp to "keep" the trout from Cedar Creek >> and you're encouraged to keep them, since they'll likely die upon release >> but we all know that most people fishing there, won't fish for them &/or keep them, if it means buying the stamp .... soooo, what's the point in adding them to an already overfished & overpopulated lake ??

If they're not likely to survive the Summer water temps ... why put the extra restrictions on them (stamp & creel limit) ??

If you do not have to have a trout stamp to harvest the trout from a FINS lake ... (or do you ??) ... then why not adopt the same rule for the Cedar Creek trout ?? Do they really think enough "legal" trout harvesting is going to take 14,000 of these fish out by Summer of 2013 ??

I don't mean to diss the trout stocking idea ... I'm just wondering out loud, as to why (if I wanted to catch trout to eat) I would travel 1hr each way to fish for them at Cedar Creek, when I can go to a FINS lake (Jacobson Park) that's only minutes away ?

And, does anyone else feel like this CC trout stocking may have a ulterior motive ... as in feeding the Bass to greater size/weights (as in the California lakes) ?? LOL !!! (or am I overthinking this whole thing ??)

    ... pappy

You do need a trout stamp with FIN lake system. As to why stock cc, it's out of my imagination.

I would guess the real reason is to help with bass growth. Big bass love trout! The bait store will be selling those 12" trout swim baits next year.

I only see it as a good thing. The trout they stock are usually in the 9-11 inch range and we all know that's plenty small enough for a 16" or bigger bass to chow down on. Trout = bass food. Fattening up the HOGS!!!

Bass love trout. Providing the Otters in that lake don't eat them all in the first three weeeks, maybe the bass will get some.

Okay so they stock the trout and i am guessing that the large mouth in cedar creek have never seen a trout. Do you think the bass will do what comes naturally and just eat the trout? Trout not being part of their natural forage. I dont ever see myself throwing a trout swimbait in a lake without trout. I know its kinda deep, just trying to think like a bass so to speak.
