Get ready for the Great Gun Control debate

I have seen statistics showing 48 gun deaths in Germany, 43 in Japan and over 10,000 in the US to support gun control laws.

There are a few statistics that I would like to know.

Per capita, is the rate of robery, assult, murder and violent crimes rate lower or higher in areas with the least restrictive gun laws?

There is no doubt that legal guns filter into the hands of criminals through theft, black market sales and so on. All guns in this country leave the factory as legal guns. So does the number of guns on the market help criminals obtain guns or does it make them affraid of encountering a gun when committing a crime, thus prevent crime?

Should there be a competence test for gun ownership like a driving test?

    my views

I'm sort of a wacko on this. I would much prefer to see open carry than conealed weapons[that way I could cross the street].All my firearms except[?] were bought legaly. I had the FBI check, and passed. In sommerset ky years ago I got ? that was checked by the BBGS[bubbas better guns sales].People with guns kill people, same with knives, cars, clubs, booze, cigareetes, cigars.pollution, this could go on and on. So we outlaw all that stuff, guess what happens? you either die of boredom or old age, jist caint win.

Even though I'm a "stay out of my business" kinda of person I think there should be a more strict approach to gun ownership. In driving we have a system in place for beginners (need one for older as well!!!!!!!!!!!!) why not guns?

When we took our CCDW class there was a woman who had to get special attention to fire her handgun.... I mean really? If you can't take a semi auto or revolver and know how to deal with it then honestly you shouldn't have one. Splitshot was there maybe he remembers her? I did let a girl who I knew borrow mine to qualify which is cool because she could shoot but what if she went and purchased a small hand canon thinking she was good enough with my .22 cal so why not get a .44 mag...I mean dirty harry was a bad mutha with it.

IMO CCDW permits are a step in the right direction but maybe a requirement of every 5 years you have to re-qualify. Maybe you can provide some CCU's from local gun ranges that you are competent and have shot "X" amounts of rounds in the target in their presence? I would like it since it gives me another excuse to shoot.

In all seriousness having a gun is a big responsibility and I think it's our right as Americans to own one but I don't see anything wrong with proving your responsible, knowledgeable and capable of handling/shooting one. Laws that would punish legal gun owners bother me. Law or procedures that insure you know what your doing is fine by me. For example....don't make it mandatory for ammo manufactures to put a serial number on every cartridge so they can be tracked like was proposed years ago. All it will do is drive the cost up and cause a headache for anyone who misplaces a piece of brass. Why not educate instead? I'm willing to bet more women and men would get involved if there were more "basics on shooting" classes. I have already seen a few in Lexington.

Plenty of laws were broken in this last shooting, adding more restrictions won't do a dang thing. Maybe we should make it illegal to kill someone? How about illegal to steal firearms?

If the scum politicians and media that's calling for more gun laws wanted to fix this problem, then every school would have armed teachers. There is a reason mass shootings happen in gun free zones.

I think most agree that something needs to be done, but as long as everyone stands their ground on the issue, nothing is going to change.

If nothing is going to change then we as Americans will simply have to reach the conclusion that the deaths of people due to gunfire and mass shootings is just part of what defines us as 'American'. It becomes a part of who we are and we have to face the reality that we accept these types of losses as payment for our freedoms.

I agree with this, but to use the same logic, why do we make any laws if they can be broken.

I know and it's sad. But I don't think we can use the fact that someone may disregard the law as a reason to not make more laws. By that logic, we wouldn't have speeding or traffic laws or tougher DUI laws, etc.

I'm talking generally here and not specific to gun control laws, because I don't really see the justification.

For example, if DUIs went on a sharp increase, would people say that there isn't any point in making the laws tougher because they would just be ignored?

These idiots that are involved in mass killings are going to do it one way or another....We're looking only at the most recent past when talking about gun control....Anybody remember Timothy McVay and the OK City bombing? Everybody remembers 9/11....Same general purpose behind what they did and what these school shooters are doing....Take away all of our guns and watch people start building bombs and killing 1000's at a time instead of 10 or 20....Crazy people are going to do what crazy people do, and if they come my direction I like my chances if I'm LEGALLY carrying a concealed weapon

    OK, I will try again..........

Say we ban all handguns, and rifles, and shotguns, and assault weapons........and all bladed weapons......FANTASTIC, we no longer have deadly weapons........

What happens when a CRAZY person takes there 18 wheeler full of gas and drives it into a packed mall......DO we BAN 18 wheelers.

We cannot legislate our way out of CRAZY. Crazy people will find ways to kill people if they choose to KILL people......period.

    later,

    Geo
