    KDFWR and Gill netting surveys

I had no idea the fishery department used Gill nets for surveys until I watched Kentucky Afield yesterday. They were at Cumberland and Gill netting specifically for Stripers. They had out Ten nets, five in one area of the lake and five in another. At first I was like WTH, why are they killing all those fish and not using the electroshock boat then I got to thinking....Duh they can't the water is too deep where they are doing this and targeting Stripers in particular. It was interesting to see the biologist talk of the year classes and perspective growth rates. Now that the lake is being raised the growth rates are expected to return to normal which is a good thing because it's much more elevated compared to the lake being lowered @ 680.
They put in 500,000 Stripers and Walleye last year and are expected to do 300,000 each this year.

The overall health and weight of the Stripers has improved over the last three years and things are looking solid for the future. I understand why they did this and support it, keep up the good work.

I wonder if those caught in the nets are harvested and used for something.

I wonder if they can take them home for the table.

    Pretty cool though.

I wondered the same thing, they had a couple of hundred fish...
