Catching bait below Wolfe creek dam

A guide took me out on Cumberland river a few years ago striper fishing. He showed me how to catch some monstrous shad up marrowbone and crocus creeks. I have been back in my own boat a few times since then and have been able to catch the shad but by the time I launch the boat catch the bait and start fishing I may burn 2-3 hrs of daylight. Is it true you can cast a net anywhere in the river now and does anyone have advice on catching bait below the dam?

The way the new fishing guide reads..... i took it that yes you can use a cast net anywhere on the river now except hatchery creek... last year it said only in the creeks . I have only seen shad by the dam a few times... and they were maybe 4 or 5 inches long nothing very big. We tried throwing swimbaits for striper down around winfreys back in may... no luck

Anyone been out recently and know if there are any skips below the dam? Was going to look this weekend but they haven't been running any water until afternoon.

caught 3 last night right at dark casting a spoon for striper and walleyes. Only caught 1 small striper but caught lots of large rainbows. Caught one that measured 23 inches and spit up a 6 inch shad when landed him. all were released

    spoon

I use a 3/4 or 1 oz. gold spoon on 40 pound braid. That way when I hang the bottom (and you will) I can pull the spoon free or I hang a big striper I can lean on him for more control in the current.

Thanks for the advice. Trout fish in the mornings but have wanted to bring the big gear and give stripers a shot at dusk sometime.
    Will try it out
