    Smile Scales Lake

    Hey guys ,
I have been off work for 3 weeks due to foot surgry and will be off 3 more so Ive been fishing alot . I spent 2 days putting Herculining { like Rhino bed liner } inside my jonboat to seal it up , works and looks nice . I hit Huntingburgh Lake Wed. - nothing but one 12 bass . Fished a friends lake Thur. caught four 15" bass on Pworms . Ran up to Scales lake in Booneville today { Friday } and fished till 12:00 . Caught 2 small gill , 6-7 small bass . I noticed fish busting the top in schools so I started chasing them and throwing a Rapala X-rap when I got into casting distance . Picked up a couple of small bass doing this and it was fun till my battery ran down , man can those fish move ! Plan on fishing Inter-Lake tomorrow as the state is going to officially open it then . Me & my brother plan on dropping my jon in unless there is a sign saying "NO BOATS" & making a bee-line for that nice high wall on the other side . Anyway , bass are biting plastic worms { 7" AND 10" in black , tequila sunrise & red shad } , some topwaters and senkos . Typical mid summer patterns are in full force now - points and main lake drops , secondary weedlines , deep ledges , frogs fished on weed mats , spinnerbaits banged into stumps or any wood in the water . The heat really ***** { use lots of sunscreen } but its a great time to fish !

    Re: Scales Lake

You may think about building an umbrella holder for your jon boat.

I use a big golf umbrella last summer to fish during the heat of the day.

I have the umbrella holder rigged up differently now so that it's more out of my way. Last fall I tried to get around the stupid thing and bumped into it and fell out of the boat. That's not going to happen anymore now that I moved the thing.

But you are right.... IT's HOT DON! lol

Too hot to fish during the midday hours for this old man.

Now I was over there the other day at 4 am and saw two guys launching their boat at 4:30 am. They were in a hurry too. Said that they had been catching some nice 14 " long bass. They didn't say if they were fishing catch and release so hopefully they returned those fish to the water. Size limit is 18" on Bluegrass Pit and Loon Pit. But otter pit is still 14 or 15 " and 5 bass limit. Loon and Bluegrass are 18" and only 1 bass over `18" can be kept.

Fishing will only improve if we allow practice catch and release. And I am still not sure that even that helps if we catch the bass in deep water.

I wish that I could get permission to dive in these pits and go down and see what's on the bottom. I just got my scuba tank certified. But I found all my other plastic equipment had melted because I stored it up above the garage in the attic. I need better ventilation in that attic. The rubber straps for my face mask and snorkel all melted onto the metal part of my regular.

All I need is a new face mask (with prescriptions ground into the glass), new rubber straps for the snorkel, new BC, new wet suit and I am ready to dive again. It may be cheaper to just buy an underwater camera and lower it down to the lake bottom than to update or upgrade all my scuba gear.

Anyone want to buy a older wet suit that's not been used in over 30 years. I kept that wet suit in the house all those years. It's fully lined inside and out to make it easy to get on and off. And it's a thick neoprene type suit. I had it custom made for me and it cost me big bucks when I had it done. Today you can buy a brand new wet suit for about $200 bucks or a dry suit for $1400. It's not cheap to get into scuba diving and there are not many places to dive around here other than the pits and a few regional rock quarries. But once you dive in the Florida Keys it spoils you for lake diving. There is nothing like diving in the Big Ocean.

Haha youve got me intrigued here buddy.. how big you talkin? i always like hearin that the nearby fisheries are doin well. Summers been slow there for me tho, but those shad should start ballin up by now and the bass should be gettin easier to target. Do you fish alot of the smaller pits or just mainly the big ones.

good luck with that. i've fished bluegrass a couple times this year and the fish just don't seem to like me there anymore. i caught a couple 6 pounders out of there last summer and the biggest i've caught this year is a 12". seems to me that the place is getting overfished, or the fish are just smarter than me. it's the only place i've really had trouble with this summer.

well one was 19in and the other was 24 inches long ... went this morning bite was a little slow on top water frogs. as soon as the daylight broke the fish turned on. caught several small ones and my buddy caught a nice 17 incher figured to be about 3lbs. as the day wore on we switched to black lizards fishing weed beds in the middle of the lake(loon pit). caught a few more fish and called it quits once the sun started to fry us. it was a good day i think for being slow all summer. i mainly fish blue grass pit to answer ur question.

the fish seemed to be biting pretty good today. i was up at lynnville lake and caught around 30 of the usual size bass (10-12") and one that was around 3 lbs. caught a few nice bluegill too. it was nice and cloudy there so we didn't have to worry about the sun fryin us

    Hey guys ,
I fished Bluegrass Friday and even though Ive dogged it in the past it made up for it . I didnt get many bass of size until noon when pods of shad started breaking top . I fished a rattle trap around and through these pods and caught 3 nice bass - right at 18" . The shad seem to come up at mid-day and the bass feed on them from below . I even snagged a shad - they are gizzard shad about 3-4" long and the schools are probably have 100-200 fish in them . I didnt have a jigging spoon with me { I was kicking myself } which may have picked up some bigger fish below the schools . If you catfish I would take a cast net and get some of those shad for cut bait - I caught a 6lb channel cat earlier in the day fishing a Senko along the bank . At first I thought I had a really nice bass until I got it to the boat , oh well , I gave it to a guy bank fishing for cats when I left . We plan on heading up there Sunday to try the shad pattern and see what we can catch . Remember there is a 2 fish 18" limit on Loon & Bluegrass but I put them all back to keep this exciting fishery going .

I return mine too, right now until the muskie get goin.. which may take a years, the fishery really needs big bass to keep the bigger shad in check. Honostly on gizzard shad lakes im not a fan of the 18 inch rule, id rather have a slot limit or something, because it kind of encourages people to take home an 18 inch fish that they might have released if they could have kept a 14incher. Just throwin that out there

I completely agree. I actually said something to the gaming officer last time he stopped me about it, but then he gave me a big speech on how I don't know what I'm talking about. If they put in effect the 12-15 slot limit, people will throw the bigger bass back. The bass around 11" flay out nicer and taste better too in my opinion. The fishery would really get some bigger bass I think if they did indeed do it, which I doubt they will.
