I'm liking the idea especially if we get a group together and make the overall cost low.![]()

I'd organize something.........but I cannot do it this fall.........It would have to be next spring or next fall, as I already have a fall trip to Quetico scheduledSo what if we made George team leader and we organize something for this fall. Heck if I can get by for less than 6 or 700 hundred dollars, I won't be in trouble with the Warden. We'll somehow make it worth Geo's wild, maybe sacrafice a liberal or something, lol, jsut kiddin guys take it easy.![]()
.
There are group size limits.... 9 is the MAX on a campsite, but 8 is more realistic.....
I've done groups of 8, but I like 6 better.................or 2 groups of 4.........It ALL works out.
If you take 2 groups of 4..............and take 1 car and a truck with a trailer, load all the GEAR for all in the trailer, and then split the fuel costs for both vehicles 8 ways...........it REALLY works out GREAT.
Again........I'd SERIOUSLY consider helping put something together.....BWCA SIDE......since it is easier to get permits, etc, etc.

What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of spring v. fall up there? I'm curious to know what your experiences have been.I'd organize something.........but I cannot do it this fall.........It would have to be next spring or next fall, as I already have a fall trip to Quetico scheduled![]()

Tough Call..........
Spring Pros:
* Better fishing..........fish are prespawn, spawn, and postspawn the first week of June.
* LOTS of fish.........
* Better Chances on Walleye, and Lakers........
* LONGER days.......4am - 10pm. You can be on the water all that time.
Spring Cons:
* Raining season........You can get rain all week.
* Can be REALLY COLD.
* BUGS can be horrible.........but if you go last week may/first week june, you generally miss them.
* Can be REALLY windy.
* REALLY COLD water..........potentially dangerous.
Fall Pros:
* Potential for bigger fish. Feeding up for the Winter, they are MONSTERS.
* No bugs. Generally after mid August they are gone. Labor day trips are GREAT.
* Water temps may still be good for swimming and cleaning up.
* Usually pretty good weather.....but COLD fronts can be **** COLD. We had a 50 degree shift last year in 1 day.
* More time to sit around the fire eating dinner, shooting the crap with friends.
* Less People
Fall Cons:
* Definitely LESS FISH.............about 1/3 as many per day as in the spring. 30 fish is a GOOD day in the Fall, where 70 is a GOOD day in the spring.
* Cold Snaps end the fishing........PERIOD......Finess fishing may work, but has not in the past.
* Less time to fish........6:00am - 7:00pm.
I like both trips............and I've made more spring trips, but I think I might like fall trips better.......that jury is still out.

Nice break down Geo.
Sorry your trip didn't work out as well, but glad you made it back safely.
Glad you made it back. The weather up there has a way of reminding you that you are alive or rather has a way of making you thank God you're alive.
I've never been up in the spring but I really like the fall fishing. You rarely see other people, there are no bugs and the weather the last 3 out of 4 years was pretty good. In the fall the fish are mostly stacked up on reefs in a certain water depth. We go in mid September. Usually smallies are 25-35 feet deep, walleye are 10-20 and lakers are 70-90. If you have a fish finder and look in those depths you'll find fish. In cold front situations the fish might go deeper but they are usually still there. If you can't get them to bite it doesn't last long and you can alway resort to sight seeing as it's one of the most beautiful places on earth.
As long as my usual September group holds together I'm going to have to go with them to help (I'm the youngest guy so I clean all the fish and do the grunt work) but if it ever falls through you can count me in. If not you guys are welcome to use my canoe, it's an old Alumicraft but she's tried and tested in that country.
As far as cost goes we have all of our own gear and take our own food. For a group of 8 it runs about $400.00 each per year. We take our own motor and tow ourselves to American Point so if you are getting a tow in you'll have to take that into account as well but it is very reasonable and will save you a bunch of needless paddling.
================I'm Baaacccccckkkkkk.........
I was sick for 3 days............the weather SUCKED................the black flies fought the mosquitoes over my BIG ole BUTT...........brutal battle.
My daughter and I finally threw in the towel, and came out a few days early........
Shortest trip I've ever taken up there................oh well.........we did catch some decent smallies........NOthing like last year, but some decent ones.
A trip report will be coming soon.
Later,
Geo
I've just returned from a vacation where the mosquitoes are so large they've been named the State Bird, and there were swarms of hungry deer (black) flies. I reached into my backpack and pulled out a can of "Off Deep Woods Bug Spray", gave myself a good mist, and those blood suckers did U-turns; even ticks kept their distance. You can buy it at Wal-Mart and it costs about $5 per can and it's worth the money. I'm going fishing Friday night and I'll have a can with me just in case.
I GUARANTEE we've ran into each other that time.Glad you made it back. The weather up there has a way of reminding you that you are alive or rather has a way of making you thank God you're alive.

I usually go over labor day.............AND all my fall trips have been East END, with a tow to american point.
A little hint...........Don't buy the BS the outfitters are telling you about a full day paddle from Sag Narrows to American Point.........My daughter and I paddled from 3rd BAY to Sag Narrows (seagull outfitter area), in 4 hours.....WOHOO.

Hey.........does the 400.00 include fuel costs up, a hotel stay, food up, etc, etc.Glad As far as cost goes we have all of our own gear and take our own food. I think my first trip up EVER cost something like $250.00, but that didn't include fuel up, hotel overnight, and the 100 bucks I spend on food, drinks, junk, etc. etc.
Later,
Geo
Geo, that's 400 for everything. It might go up or down depending on gas. The guys I go with have been going for over 20 years. They've got it down to a science and we take everything.
I know what you mean about the tow. We go big style, coolers, cots, the whole 9. They are all older guys so they like their comfort. We pontoon the canoes together and motor out to American Point.
We don't overnight anywhere but in BWCA either, we just shower there at the outfitter and then head home.
What do you do with the motor at American point? Leave it there until you come back?As far as cost goes we have all of our own gear and take our own food.
