    cumberland river today

fished cumbrtland river today put in at dam to gravel bar below winfrery's rock. caught so many fish I'd estmate around 50 or more. brought 2 man limit of nice skillet rainbows home. Water green and murky and 58 degree. We caught rainbows, browns, walleye, white bass, moutain tarpin (skip jacks) and large mouthbass. Big stripped bass chaseing rainbows on top water at hatchery creek and helms. Never seen that before on river. didnt break 20" mark, but had 3 19+ rainbows redder than Ive ever seen them and 4 slot browns. had river to ourselfs from helms down go figure on free fishin day? Had to keep fishing in 2 mph current to find fish. Any slower and fish not hitting. Gravel bars were dead and not producing. 10,000 cfs, short patches of good current. Saw a bald egale and over all great day on the river. We had to work hard and fish fast. Had 43 miles on the boat today covered a lot of water. ran one stretch 5 differnt times and it prouduced 5 out of 6 times. To top it all off took a guy who has never been to cr before and he is hooked on it.

Artificial. Silver #5 shad rap was what my partner used I used crawfish #5. Stuck with those two lures all day. Wanted to change when things got slow during the dead zone of the day peak sunshine hours, but never did stuck with those two all day. What boats I spoke with were catching good fish. One group was dragging live bait, another was tied up fishing bottom. The guys at the dam were catching some 20+ browns dont know if they were in boat or off bank, but they were useing live bait. Saw a brown a guy had had to be 24+ inches. I never use live bait guess i don't like waiting for the fish I go find them.

Sounds like you had one of those "in the zone" days. Nothing better than when you take a guy who has never been and you catch a load of fish...it makes you look like the "Bill Dance" of trout fishing!

Hope to get down there next week.

Thanks for the report - that's a great day on the water!

I fished this area for the first time a couple weeks ago. The flow was around 13K all day and previous days. The one thing I couldn't figure out was why the current speed really picks up for a short shoot below rock house? I see this a lot with underwater bars but the water was 20+ft deep so I'm puzzled what causes this? Not sure if the river gets squeezed at this section or what. It's really not an outside bend or anything easy to explain.

I hear ya man believed I clocked that current at 3+ mph this weekend. I usually fish oppisite side rockhouse. Gravel slope kinda bar starts below island above. Change sides around rockhouse so yeah it does kinda squeeze toward the rockhouse side. River strange this year I love 10,000+, and a firm belever of the current holding the fish. But had to look hard for current seems like you'd be on one side of river where you thought it was and it would look like it's on the other side. Looking back it was right down the middle. This work on the dam keeps you on your toes so far as your stratigey goes. One day I may take up dragging bait, but I,d have to have some cold beer and a d driver. The way I fish you ain't got time to barley get a drink cause you may miss out.

Just got back myself and had a good day, started out slow but got better. I am wondering why I can catch any on the riffles, like I always have in the past. But it might be because I like to drag bait if I am with someone. Still is fun if you hit a good spot.

did you notice all the land slides I guess from all that rain? We were at the rockhouse and a fresh slad of rock had fallen somtjme recently. Sitting in the boat eating lunch and I kid you not a rock the size of a quareter fell in the boat. needless to say we high tailed it out of there!

Yes we was talking about it today also. Also seen a lot of limb's/logs floating down the river, I watched a large tree limb fall into the river that was dead. Guess we got to start wearing hard hats. Have you caught any fish with holes in them? The last 2 trips I caught a fish that had a hole in it. Caught one to day that had a hole that went thru the fish.
