Where to fish In Bowling Green??

    Hello all,

I am trying to find out good places to go Fishing in Bowling Green. I'm a student at WKU, so I know my way around the city but not the Rivers.

I tried The Green River on sunday 6/19/11, at the boils near the bridges in Weldon Peete Park and did ok. ( One large mouth, and a Skip jack)

What would you all recommend? I'm land bound, but I'm willing to walk/wade just about anywhere for a good catch. And I'll fish for what ever, Skips, bass, trout, catfishyou name it.

    Thanks

Re: Where to fish In Bowling Green??

Hey I went to school at WKU as well. I tried a bunch of different places in the area and I found the best place to fish from the bank is below the dam at Barren River. You are only about 40 minutes away from there. Also there is some pretty good fishing from the bank on the main lake as well.

I also fished the Green River inside of Mammoth Cave park quite a bit. Although it's much easier to do with a canoe or kayak there are still plenty of places that are wadeable in the summer months. You can google Houchins Ferry and go there to get access. I'd say it's 17-18 miles from BG so not very far.

Another pretty cool place is Shanty Hollow Lake. It's prob about 14 miles from BG going towards Rough River right off 185 I think it is. I only fished there one time for about 2 hours and then it got dark on me. I just happened across the lake on the way to play golf with a friend. I always keep a spin rod in my car, so I saw it and tried if for a bit. I caught about 3-4 largemouth in the 12-15 inch range. They only allow small watercraft on the lake and I didn't see anyone there. Much of the lake is hikable around the edges. I was never able to go back, but from what I saw I would def check it out.

I never had much luck on the rivers close in around bowling green. The great thing about BG is you are right in the middle of Barren River, Green River, Nolin River, etc but the really good fishing spots are all 30-60 minutes drive it seems. Of course when I went to school I didn't have a canoe or kayak at the time so I was prob fishing areas that hads tons of pressure like the park access points close to campus. I always had a really good time catching smallmouth in the Green River and never left disappointed, plus the park is beautiful. The 30 minute drive was well worth it. Anyway hope this helps and go TOPPERS!

There isn't much inside of Bowling Green, but if you are willing to drive 30-40 min, there are many opportunities. You are definitely limited by being land-bound, but there are several spots you can still fish. Barren dam is an excellent spot, and can really be good with the hybrids at times. Drakes creek and Trammel creek all have smallies, spots, and lms in them. Trammel also stocks trout every month, so that is another option. Jennings creek in Bowling Green is also stocked monthly with trout. Three Springs Park lake in BG is also stocked during the winter months, and has some nice crappie in it, as well as shell cracker, gills, and small bass. Shanty Hollow is an option, but without a small boat, you are very limited. Good luck!

Barren river lake is probably my favorite place to fish in KY. Get a small boat and enjoy it. The bass fishing is about as easy as it gets, and it must be full of big stripes because we catch a bunch on bass lures.

Shanty Hollow out north of town. Green River north of town. Barren River in town. Barren out northwest of town at Greencastle. Drakes creek at the park out Scottsville road. Drakes out in Alvaton/Boyce area. (There is some little park out there somewhere. (Looked it up Romanza Johnson Park)) Trammel out southeast somewhere.

You can drive down 31 to Franklin and fish alot of west fork of Drakes too. In Russelville there is Boy Scout lake and Spa is somehwere out that ways too. And Briggs lake in RVK.

And you can be at BRL in abut 25-30 minutes from BG.

    Try this > http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour....90863&z=9&t=m

And as a student you can check out or rent kayaks and canoes from Preston Center. Best thing to do is get one for the weekend and make the most of it. Peabody WMA has lots and lots of sloughs and ponds and strip pits to explore but you need a Peabody permit that you can get at Wal-Marks or someplace.

    Thank you all,

I completely forgot about ORAC and the rentals.

Where do you all access Trammel and Jennings? I thought about trying Hobson Grove park.

I think KDFW is planning on putting in a small ramp at the confluence of Gasper River and Barren River. That is a good spot to fish out Barren River Road.

When the river is down, it is a really good stretch to catch bass if you have a kayak, canoe, or small jon.

The source for Jennings is a wet weather spring at the bottom of Preston Miller Park. It will go completely dry in summer and droughts.

You can access trammel off of Mt. Lebanon Road or Boyce-Fairview or Woodburn-Allen Springs.

A kayak and a someone to drop you off or pick you up will open up alot of fishing for you.

Phil Moore park has a good access place on Drakes. You can float it all the way to Barren and the to Weldon Peete off of Old Louisville rd if you want to.

What are you studying at Western?

    I am a Sales Major.

And Last evening I tried Barren at Hobson Grove, right were the creek drains in. I only caught a small crappie, but there was a lot of activity of small fish eating bugs.

Jennings at Glen Lily Rd (where they stock the trout), never comes close to being dry. Always good flow from there.

Re: Where to fish In Bowling Green??

Well i tried Drake's at Phil Moore, the water was up and muddy from the rain. And no one was catching anything.

Today (Sunday) I went to Jining's at Glen Lily Road. Even with the extra flow, and mud, I was able to catch a decent Rainbow Trout.

Does anyone know when they Stock it? All I could find from KDFW was the months stocked.
