    Beaver Lake Regulations...

If you read on page 37 of the new boating and fishing regs book that you can get free at any wally world, it has some odd wording about Beaver Lake plus some others that I don't fish, in that it reads you can use any size motor as long as you are not basically "waking". I called Frankfort to double check for I always thought Beaver Lake in Lawrenceburg was 10HP max. The officer said it is 10HP max and I was right in that the wording does read I can idle my big motor which is a 90 by the way. I am going to try it and if they say anything then whip out the book and play dumb even though I know differently. The officer also told me that these "Free" regs books were not the real 100% regulations, they were simplified in Laymans (sp) terms for idiots like me. For a true more wordy regs book, he says you have to get them from Frankfort. Funny how I thought this was the bible of regs for the past 5 years to find out now it is not. There are several lakes besides Beaver listed under this "questionable wording", so my deal is if you fish them then you may try and challenge them. If I do, I will. Too much trolling time to move from the Launch ramp at Beaver to the last cut on the right in the back. This is why I don't fish this lake more and all they are doing is not getting my $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for their local economy.

    Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

dude their are several of us that fished beaver on a regular basis that have for years tried to get that rule changed. we called people, sent emails, drew up petition's and sent them in.

a couple of years ago the fish and game depart. started a survey. an on the water survey and one on the internet. not only for beaver but for 9 different lakes in ky. the internet survey listed a couple of different choices about possible rules. the way the internet survey was set up was if you voted it was for all 9 lakes to change together. you couldn't vote on lakes seperatley.
and you could only vote once per IP address.

So it seens funny that only 7 of the 9 lakes were changed. I for one would like to see the whole lake no wake regardless of the horsepower. jon boats with 9.9's throw much bigger wake then my bassboat idle speed or at 55mph.
not that i would want to run that fast on beaver. just making a point.

I had words with a game officer one day because it started storming and I idled back to the dock. luckly he didn't give me a $200.00 ticket.

    Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

Is it the wake they are worried about or the fuel/oil mix from the bigger motors going into the water?

    Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

I think it was 2 years ago at Beaver, a game warden gave me a hard time about idiling my 90 horse back to the dock. Trolling motor quit working, and could not get a tow from anyone. He said that he could ticket me, and if he wasnt busy he would tow me. Brian Penrod

I contacted the KY Dept of Fish and Wildlife about this same subject just weeks ago. I was told that idle speed only has been brought up several times at Commission meetings and could be brought up again, but there has been very strong opposition from the landowners around the lake. This opposition seems to be the only reason why the lake is not an idle speed only lake. I, too, would fish it more if the change was made. I even got some strange looks from the folks around the ramp when I fired up the motor to load my boat a fews years ago. That was my last trip there. Sounds to me like its turned into a private lake instead of a public one.

    Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

The last time I fished the lake was a couple of years ago and put in before daylight. Nobody around so I put her on full plane all the way back to the last cut. When I took out the marina employee met me at the top of the ramp and said they had it on video of me doing this and the next time they would call the game warden to show him the video to ticket me. I told him that it was funny how all day long I got swamped by pontoons with their 9.9 motors but nothing was said to them. I sure do believe it is still the law that when passing another boat engaged in fishing you are supposed to idle, not full 9.9 plane that puts out a wake twice the size of my boat at top speed and that is a Deep V boat at that. He said the "Locals" that had their own docks know the rules and they "All Follow Them", basically calling me a liar to my face for I never saw a pontoon launch whenever I was on the lake, so I figured most of the swampers were "Locals". I told him he was full of crap(not the exact word I used) and that I would not be back and I have not. MSD was dead on when he said it turned into a big private lake instead of a public lake. Sad part is that there is some really big fish in this lake and it is one of the closest ones to Georgetown that I have a shot of a BIG greenfish. Hens and I caught them with skipping flukes under the docks the last time and I hit them pretty good the trip before with a White Rat, that I bought in the local marina shop, on top of the slop and spinnerbaits paralleling the outer edges of the slop. Keep on running off the "Non-Locals" and see where the Marina owners end up for I have never seen a pontoon boat flipping and pitching trying to catch a bass. I would bet money that more money is spent on "Tackle and Supplies" by us fisherman in fishing boats than the "Local Pontooners".

    Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

I went to this lake (once) with having to run my trolling motor only, it was not worth the effort to go back. I liked the lake, it had grass in it, which I love to fish. But when a Pontoon comes rolling by me while fishing and almost knocks me out of the boat from it's wake...I just can't justify going back. My 200 hp motor at idle speed doesn't put out nearly as big of a wake as that Pontoon did. Your right Elnut, it's the locals that live around the lake that want to make all the rules to benefit them and not the non-locals.....

    Talking Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

Ownership at the dock has changed in the last couple of years and the present dock owners are awesome. A couple years ago there were some owners that lacked courtesy and were just down right rude. Pistol packing and waiting for someone to do something wrong so they could call the cops or Game Warden. I wish the game wardens would focus on the No Wake Past people engaged in fishing. They could make some serious money doing that.
For me it is well worth fishing the lake with an occasional 9.9 going by than to have jet skiers doing laps up and down the bank that I am trying to fish. Every lake has its problems, some more than others. Not all people share the respect of another angler.
I have done 60 mph on Beaver during a tournament. A storm blew in with lots of lightning and the Law book clearly states that a big motor can be used if inclement weather is threatening. I was not the only one who did this and nothing was ever said bad about it. Hopefully see you on the water.

    Re: Beaver Lake Regulations...

Elwood: Go the KDFWR website and download the 2008 Fishing and Boating Regulations. Unless I missed something, what the 2008 regs says is 10HP or idle speed on Beaver. Check it out and if you read it the same way as I do, I would call the officer you talked to back and ask him if the regs on their official website are official or not....like I said...I may be missing it but I read on their website basically the same thing you did in the Wal Mart handout.

You could always slap a 9.9 sticker over the 150 sticker. I'm sure everyone would believe it.

This is what I'd do on a nice clean private rrrrr public lake like Beaver. Go there for day trips on my non-KY/DH weekends and pay their crazy $5-10 launch fee. Then stick 10 keepers, fire up the electric knife and clean them all right there at the ramp every Saturday for a few months. Fresh fish always makes me feel like I've been compensated a little especially when you have a situation like this.

Night fishing in the Summer can avoid a lot of this drama too.

After we get through jacking them for several years, they'll be calling it Taylorsville South.
