Does anyone have a good Sloppy Joe recipe that comes close to what we used to get in the school system back in the '60s? Man I loved those Sloppy Joes back then.
Here's a recipe that I have but it's missing something.
SLOPPY JOES
Can easily double or triple the recipe.
Figure approximately 6 servings per recipe.
Freezes well.
1 # ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green pepper
½ cup diced celery
8 oz. tomato sauce
¼ cup ketchup
1 T. vinegar (or lemon juice)
1 ½ teaspoon Worcestershire
1 T. white or brown sugar
½ - 1 teaspoon dry mustard
Salt + freshly ground black pepper
Brown and drain ground beef. Add other ingredients and simmer over low heat for at least a couple of hours. Serve on good quality buns (e.g. egg bread) with carrot sticks and other crunchy raw vegetables.
Dang that looks like it doesnt need anything to me, all my favorite stuff in there. Thyme, orageno or cummin could be added. I always go to food network and click on Paula Dean for ideas to improve something.Does anyone have a good Sloppy Joe recipe that comes close to what we used to get in the school system back in the '60s? Tyme, I cook for large numbers so here is a simple recipe I came up with many years ago and the kids I feed like this one better than schools. 30#ground beef-3#s hot sausage 1gallon KC masterpiece or your favorite BBQ sauce-1 gallon mild salsa....salsa is so much easier than chopping everything and adds all your onions peppers etc....feeds about 120.Made from ground Chuck, Chuck made it so where does Joe come in....Sloppy Chuck Bam....had to..lol try it you'll like it. just adjust to the amount your feeding at home or party.
Sloppy Joes was about the only thing I can remember tastin' good back in the day's of school...they dag gone oatmeal they served for breakfast wasn't fit no one, neither man nor dog. Stick a spoon it and by gawd that spoon was there to stay! Turn the bowl upside down or whatever, it didn't matter, that oatmeal stuck!!
By the way, nice sounding Sloppy Joe recipe!
I don't remember exact quantities, but my mom used to make some killer home made sloppy joes with ground beef seasoned as you prefer (I always used cayenne pepper, salt, and onions) equal parts of ketchup and mustard, and like a X amount of brown sugar.
I'll see if I can find out the exact amounts, but it is really good.

My mother used to make some killer sloppy joes by using tomato puree and chili powder, also made slaw to put on them, the ones from our school used to same recipe, also manwich works good. I do miss the old oatmeal cookies that we had in school and the toasted cheese sandwiches, ah those were the days.![]()
I hope my recipe will give you some ideas.
1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 cup water
1/4 cup Heinz ketchup
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried mustard
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
8 hamburger buns, split
In a sauce pan (for small consistency) or a large skillet put on medium-high heat, saute' the ground beef for 5 minutes. Add the onion, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and 2 cloves of minced garlic; saute' for 5 more minutes, or until onion is tender. Drain the fat.
Mix in tomato paste and water, stirring until paste is dissolved. Stir in ketchup, garlic, chili powder, paprika, vinegar, oregano, dried mustard, salt and pepper.
Add brown sugar 10 minute before stirring. (If you add it too early it may burn).
