Social Security has been ripped from ever since the gubment realized there was a surplus to steal!
I will go slooowly so you can understand! Are you with me? Most people rely on social security for their retirement. They rely on medicare and medicade so they can have security when they can no longer work. Still with me?

I'll say this real slow so YOU get it.

Most people save and invest in plans like 401k/IRA so they don't have to rely on SS fixed income.

Most people know that if you're relying solely on SS for your retirement you'll be lucky to afford a box of nightcrawlers once a month to fish with.

Most people would rather the government didn't forcibly make them pay into a broken system so they could take that money and invest it for their retirement.

Most people believe the SS system will fail because it's been managed to insolvency by the federal government, and the fact it's paying out way more than it takes in.

    Did I lose you?

That is what I always thought as well, but maybe people like the poster above prefer to be wet nursed by the government.

Not in all cases...but in some cases folks recieving disability checks should have their cases looked at again, maybe open up their file and go over it with a fine tooth comb. I'm under the impression that some folks out there recieving disability may not be quite as disabled as what they're leading the government to believe they are.

Exactly. I'd gladly relinquish all claim to Social Security today and let them keep every penny I've contributed if they would just stop taking it from my check now. They could even keep my employer contributing the matching funds for me and I wouldn't care.

In reality, SS will likely be less than 1% of my retirement funds.

Yes you did! I will give you the same senario as tim t. Make 10$ an hour and give 5$ of it for your insurance then you tell me just how much you can invest in your 401k or personal savings plan and be able to retire without government assistance? Is warren buffet giving free tips cause I need a few?

I'll give you a more of a real world scenario instead of the extreme example you use. You also said "most people".

I don't believe most people after they've been in the work force long enough to develop a trade or skill are making $10 and hour. According to the Ky Labor Cabinet the overall average wage in 2009 was $711.79 a week, or a little over 37k a year.

The numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt because the economy is in the tank and unemployment is rampant. The economy is not improving because people and businesses are afraid the mental giants in charge right now are going to bankrupt the country in pursuit of empowering themselves and their political party. Think social justice is their goal? That's a laugh.

If health insurance is costing a person making 10 bucks an hour 10k a year, they need to take advantage of KCHIP to make sure their kids are covered, and look into one of the pooled cost programs for themselves. The next thing to do instead of looking to the federal government to provide for them is get with the Ky Workforce Investment Board for job training and placement services.

Aside from short term assistance, having money taken from others and given to them by the government does NOT help anyone in the long run. It has just the opposite effect.

All I'm saying is think a little before you start talking slooowly to others.

We will just have to disagree I guess. I dont think most make 17$ an hour and you dont think insurance cost 800$ a month.

Does that mean I have to read it slow so I won't get ahead of you?

I don't disagree a family insurance plan costs $800 a month but I'll agree we disagree on most everything else.

Our premiums will go up even more soon. You can't eliminate the insurance companies' ability to balance cost/risks, add millions of new people, thousands of new federal IRS workers, and thousands more government bureaucrats without it costing more. Somebody's going to pay for it...and it's going to be us.

No, you have to read it slow standing on one foot with your left eye closed, one hand behind your back, fingers crossed, tongue out, hair neatly combed, and only between the hours of 10:17 and 11:42 am CDT. Then you won't get ahead of me.
