Not surprised UK is in the top 5, but Louisville is valued 12 million dollars more than UK... Louisville's profit is only 1 million LESS than UK's total value.
Indiana is also in the top 5.http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmi...aluable-teams/

What is more telling is that the Big 10 has 6 schools in the top 25......Income generated from Basketball in the midwest is big.

I wonder where UL ranked on this list before the YUM Center and its luxury box revenue.
They have been the most profitable basketball team for a season, prior to moving into the Yum Center. I believe they were number 1 in profits the last year in Freedom Hall. They are always in the top 3 or so in profit. They have been in the top among attendance leaders prior to moving into the Yum Center as well. The luxury suites are important no doubt, that is why UK wants to build a new arena or revamp Rupp Arena, but the Yum Center is not the only reason the program is profitable.
Everybody's gotta be best at something I reckon. Y'all keep being the Mack-Daddy's at earning bucks, and we'll keep our eye on other less-significant goals....all-time wins, #1 recruiting classes, Final Fours, National Championships....

Just imagine what the profit margin would be at UofL if they paid Pitino what he was actually worth? I believe he earned $6 Million last year to not win either the Big East Regular or Conference Tournament and then to get bounced in Round 1 of the NCAA Tourney for the second year in a row.
He made 3 million. Maybe you were thinking of Sleezeapari's salary.
I guess maybe you should read your own article when you post a link boasting about Louisville. The exert below is copied straight from the article. Actually it says Pitino received OVER $6 Million from Louisville last year.
College basketball’s head coaches are also often paid as much as, if not more than, many NBA coaches. Louisville’s own Rick Pitino is a great example. Thanks to a loyalty bonus in his contract, Pitino received over $6 million from Louisville last year.
Pitino got a loyalty bonus that year. His salary is 3 million dollars. Look up his contract. Here, I'll even give you a link to KY public employee salaries.

Tim-Not trying to dispute UL profitability. Just curious as to the overall effect that the luxury boxes revenue have on UL overtaking UNC. I found this quote in the article:
"But the major driver behind Louisville’s financial success is contributions to the basketball team, which hit $20 million last year. Only five other teams were able to generate $20 million in total revenue, let alone from a single source. A significant portion of those contributions are tied to luxury seating. The financial windfall that seating-related contributions generate for college basketball teams is just one way that the sport is progressively emulating its professional counterpart. This is the first year that our valuations have captured the effects of Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center, which opened in October 2010. The state-of-the-art waterfront arena rivals many NBA venues, and it has certainly played a major role in Louisville’s 39% growth in value over the last two years."
A 39% growth in two years in this economy.........that deserves a wow.........
Believe me, I know how important those luxury suites are to the overall health of the program. My only point was that they did really well before the move to the Yum Center. Of course, when they remodeled Freedom Hall back in the late 80's early 90's, they added luxury boxes then which made a huge difference.
One other thing to keep in mind is that Louisville is the largest city in the state with Ford, UPS and Humana in town, so they make money off the corporate side of things as well.
Of course some people think they are only profitable because of beer sales!![]()
