Maybe the amish give large political donations? Many are LOADED!

I just read an article in the Bowling Green Ky news paper and also they had link on WBKO, on how the Amish are a big influence in Ky politics. Seems that the legisatiors approved a bill that they do not have to put the orange triangles on there buggies, instead they can use silver reflective tape, which they agreed that that wasnt as "gaudy" and againist their religion. Question is is why are they such an influence, when 1, they do not vote,2 they do not pay personal income taxes, 3 they do not pay in to social security, 4 some do not acceppt the US their country, they dont profess their citizenship. I am not putting these good people down, I myself come from Amish heritage, but never was part of that community, I am just trying to understand why there is a difference in the way us tax paying, voting, legal citizens, are treated, as compared to these other groups, ie illegals. etc.? Just confused.![]()

I was doing some research myself and found some stuff that bugs me.
The Amish don't pay taxes, Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security Taxes. They also pay no federal income taxes.
THAT is ******** if you ask me. They still use our roads, yet pay no general fund taxes.
Every SINGLE AMERICAN should be required to pay taxes. PERIOD.

Imagine being at the Ronald McDonald Charity house, and seeing a group of 20 staying there while they have a child in the hospital....something about that irks me.....
Here we go folks.... contrary to retoric the Amish do pay income tax, property tax, sales tax.
They can be exempt from Social Security tax if the aply for an exemption..But teachers and many other groups are as well.
"Do the Amish pay taxes?"
"Self-employed Amish do not pay Social Security tax. Those employed by non-Amish employers do pay Social Security tax. The Amish do pay real estate, state and federal income taxes, county taxes, sales tax, etc.
The Amish do not collect Social Security benefits, nor would they collect unemployment or welfare funds. Self sufficiency is the Amish community's answer to government aid programs. Section 310 of the Medicare section of the Social Security act has a sub-section that permits individuals to apply for exemption from the self-employment tax if he is a member of a religious body that is conscientiously opposed to social security benefits but that makes reasonable provision of taking care of their own elderly or dependent members. The Amish have a long history of taking care of their own members. They do not have retirement communities or nursing homes; in most cases, each family takes care of their own, and the Amish community gives assistance as needed."
So, in short, the Amish do pay property tax. The answer comes directly from: http://www.800padutch.com/atafaq.shtml. I wouldn't normally copy and paste like this, but the answer is worded better than any paraphrase of mine would be.

I don't object to folks living their life the way they choose, don't know anything about the federal taxes they pay but they don't buy gasoline or diesel fuel but still use the roads, personally I believe these folks should be required to pay the road taxes the rest of us have to pay.
I looked through ALL the information you provided, and it is really, REALLY ambiguous. Here we go folks.... contrary to retoric the Amish do pay income tax, property tax, sales tax.

* They don't pay social security, or medicare tax.
* They don't pay local and state government tax.
They DO pay sales and property tax.
I'm still unsure on State and Federal Income tax.
Next, are you SURE about teachers, and social security, and Medicare tax?. Federal employees, some state employees, and railroad men have their own plans, but I didn't think teachers did.

Had you rather them be a burden on society by coming into the system and drawing on every program avaliable? Or had you rather them pull a 300lb buggy down the road with a horse? I think they dont cost us a penny personally.
Some teacher groups can and do opt out of social security, as they can purchase their own retirement plan, that can be better than Social Security. Ky Don I work in a food stamp/gov asstance office, and we have and do have Amish clients, on both food and medical benifits, a lot of them do not have social security #s, they do not have birth certs, the majority do not pay income tax, mostly the only ones that do pay income taxes have business that are very profitable, or visual. I am no way against there way of life, but if you are goona live here and use stuff im paying for with my tax dollars then you should have to honor the SAME RULES AS I HAVE TOO ADHERE TO, period. Just because your religion is different doesnt mean I have to put my life at risk cause you dont want to put a orange triangle on the back of a black buggy, that you cant see in the dark. How many of them have to die before they relize that they need to be seen. Later.
Some of the Amish and Mennonites do buy gas. Every time I go to one of their communities, I see a couple of them driving old pickup trucks with children and teenage boys riding in the back. The boys are always dressed like they have been working, wearing dusty overalls and well worn hats.I don't object to folks living their life the way they choose, don't know anything about the federal taxes they pay but they don't buy gasoline or diesel fuel but still use the roads, personally I believe these folks should be required to pay the road taxes the rest of us have to pay.
As for the SMV signs (safety orange triangles) attached to the back of the buggies, I guess their objection is for vanity reasons. I think if I were riding in one of them, I had rather have the SMV sign attached than to have a car slam into the back of the buggy.
I'm with you, if they are going to use our roads they should be paying road taxes.
In Kentucky the teachers retirement system exempts many treachers from SS tax. Amish do pay income tax and state income tax just like anybody else. As far as local and state government tax goes I am not sure what you are referring to. They pay state income tax and sales tax so I don't know of another state government tax they would be liable for. The local taxes in Franklin county (in addition to property tax) is an occupational tax of 2% (and yes it stinks) paid by worker/employee. But no one is exempt including Amish.I looked through ALL the information you provided, and it is really, REALLY ambiguous.

If I could get a religous exemption on federal, state and all taxes I am starting a new church! It will be the Church of the Almighty dollar. We will also profess Sunday beer sales as part of our services.
